Cost Actions
European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) creates open spaces where people and ideas can grow.
COST funds interdisciplinary research networks called COST Actions.
These Actions bring together researchers, innovators and other professionals including industry specialists, who are based in Europe and beyond, to collaborate on research topics for a period of 4 years.

Working Group 1: Past practices of deliberation
In this Working Group we explore the various manifestations of patterns of deliberation and conflict resolution that emerged in the modern era. The purpose of this analysis, based on a hermeneutic reading of the available corpus, is to investigate how, when and why particular patterns of deliberation arose, modified, disintegrated, and perhaps reappeared in different historical settings. On this basis, broader insights into the cognitive and socio-cultural matrices of contemporary societies in Europe and beyond will be obtained.
Working Group 2: Culture, cognition and narratives of legitimization
In Working Group 2 we will analyse different forms of practices of deliberation in contemporary societies. This set includes the analysis of traditionally cultural-bound patterns of deliberation in the classic public spheres, in subaltern counter-publics, in the political, legal, and economic spheres, in art, civil society, in the digital sphere. The aim is also to shed new light on how different patterns of deliberation and notions of the common good are perpetuated and modified in the face of political, cultural, social and other tensions that mark contemporary societies.
Working Group 3: Past deliberative practices and contemporary risks
In this working group we will harmonise a wider spectrum of research fields and disciplines essential for the analysis of “embedded” practices pf deliberation to discuss future development. In this respect, the aim of this WG is to move towards formulating a common research framework to study the impact of historical deliberative practices on contemporary decision-making.
