As I look at my great-nephew Linus thoroughly enjoying the sand he is immersed in, his smile calls me to reflect on how a young boy can teach us about being with the earth.

Today I will bring a renewed consciousness and pleasure to where I find myself on this good earth and savor the joy of being alive here and now. I will hear Jesus and Linus saying: I love being here with you.

The Power of a Song

The theme for this week of Advent is the Holy Family. The term Holy Family calls to mind a prayer we pray at our Liturgies each Saturday. This prayer, composed by Fr. Jack is special for him and inspirational for us. The prayer is all about God’s care for us and ends with the reminder that in all life’s circumstances: “the Love of God surrounds us, the Light of God shines in us, the Spirit of God hovers over us, and wherever we are, God is. Through Jesus, Mary and Joseph, family likes us….” The first time I prayed this, I thought: “Oh yes, of course, – family like us!” Dec 17 images

The word family has many meanings. It describes the special relationship of people related by blood, marriage, adoption and beyond. We also describe families as nuclear, extended, blended, stepfamilies, single parent etc. The word family is also used to describe how we are connected to one another beyond even these definitions.

Here is a favorite example of mine:

Being a sports enthusiast, what comes mind as I think of the word “family” is the song “We are Family” by Sister Sledge. Here’s what happened. It was June 1, 1979. The Pittsburgh Pirates were losing 8-5, and it started raining. While everyone was waiting for the game to get underway again, music was being played throughout the stadium. When the song “We are Family” started playing, Willie Stargell sat up and took notice. He knew immediately what he had to do to help the team. Willie made an executive decision, called the press box and told them to announce that the song that was playing. “We are Family” was now the official song of the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was the spark the team needed to bring them together. The song was adopted by the team and the fans. The power of one song! Not only did the Pirates come back to win the game that night, they went on to become the 1979 World Series Champions.

At this time of year, there are so many songs that accompany us on our Advent journey. Christmas is overflowing with songs as we celebrate the true meaning of Christmas and that give voice to our wishes for Christmas. There is power in a song. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if this Christmas, we would join our voices with others around the world and sing “Peace on Earth” and “Joy to the World” and it became so?

Semana de la Sagrada Familia

El poder de una canción

El tema de esta semana de Adviento es la Sagrada Familia.  El término Sagrada Familia nos recuerda la oración que rezamos cada sábado en nuestras liturgias.  Esta oración, compuesta por el P. Jack, es especial para él e inspiradora para nosotros. La oración trata del cuidado de Dios por nosotros y termina recordándonos que en todas las circunstancias de la vida: “el Amor de Dios nos rodea, la Luz de Dios brilla en nosotros, el Espíritu de Dios permanece en nosotros, y dondequiera que estemos, allí está Dios. Por medio de Jesús, María y José, la familia nos quiere…”. Cuando recé esto por primera vez, pensé: “Oh, claro que sí, ¡la familia nos quiere!”.

La palabra familia tiene muchos significados. Describe la relación especial entre personas vinculadas por lazos de sangre, matrimonio, adopción y otros. También calificamos a las familias como nucleares, extensas, mixtas, adoptivas, monoparentales, etc.  El termino familia también se usa para describir como nos relacionamos entre nosotros, por encima incluso de estas definiciones.

He aquí uno de mis ejemplos favoritos:

Al ser una aficionada al deporte, cuando pienso en la palabra “familia” me viene a la mente la canción “Nosotros Somos Familia” de la Hna. Sledge. Esto fue lo que paso. Era el 1 de junio de 1979.  Los Piratas de Pittsburgh perdían 8-5 cuando empezó a llover.  Mientras todos esperaban a que se reanudara el partido, sonaba música por todo el estadio.  Cuando empezó la canción “Nosotros Somos Familia”, Willie Stargell se levantó y prestó atención.  Inmediatamente supo lo que tenía que hacer para ayudar al equipo.  Willie tomó una decisión ejecutiva, llamó a la prensa del estrado y les dijo que anunciaran que la canción que estaba sonando, “Nosotros Somos Familia” era ahora la canción oficial de los Piratas de Pittsburgh.  Era el impulso que el equipo necesitaba para unirse. Often shepherds are presented in idyllic fashion during Advent. In the first century however, shepherds had an unsavory reputation. They often lived in the fields without supervision. They were often accused of stealing the newborns of the flock. The people were warned not to buy wool, milk of kids from them because it was presumed to be stolen property.

The shepherds are in the field under the blackness of the winter sky and suddenly the hill is ablaze with the radiance of God and booming with the sound of angelic voices declaring to them the “good news.” The shepherd’s response to this visitation is abject terror. This revelation to them of all people is unexpected. This is a group of people under Rabbinic ban because of their necessary isolation from religious practices that make legal observance impossible. They are a despised class. The angels first calm the shepherd’s fears and then tell them the chosen of God is born in Bethlehem. What wonderful news for these poor, lowly and despised people! These are individuals seemingly estranged from God and struggling under oppression. The angels make it clear that this savior is for everyone. No one is excluded.

Have we collectively forgotten the birth of the savior isn’t just for the pious, but for all? Who are the new shepherds among us who need to hear the “good news?”

A menudo se presenta a los pastores de forma idílica durante el Adviento.  Sin embargo, en el siglo I, los pastores tenían una reputación desagradable.  Con frecuencia vivían en los campos sin supervisión. Se les acusaba de robar las crías recién nacidas del rebaño.  Se advertía a la gente para que no les compraran lana, leche o cabritos, ya que se presumía que eran bienes robados.

Los pastores están en el campo bajo la oscuridad del cielo invernal y, de repente, la colina arde con el resplandor de Dios y retumba con el sonido de voces angelicales que les declaran la “buena nueva”.   La reacción del pastor ante esta visita es de absoluto terror.  Esta revelación es inesperada.  Se trata de un grupo de personas sometidas a la prohibición rabínica debido a su necesario aislamiento de las prácticas religiosas que hacen imposible la observancia legal.  Son una clase despreciada.

Los ángeles primero calman los temores de los pastores y luego les dicen que el elegido de Dios ha nacido en Belén.  ¡Qué buena noticia para este pueblo pobre, humilde y despreciado!  Se trata de individuos aparentemente alejados de Dios y que luchan bajo la opresión.  Los ángeles dejan claro que este salvador es para todos.  Nadie queda excluido.

¿Hemos olvidado colectivamente que el nacimiento del salvador no es sólo para los piadosos, sino para todos?  ¿Quiénes entre nosotros son los nuevos pastores que necesitan oír la “buena nueva”?

Today is the 50^th Thursday of 2023, the Feast of St John of the Cross, 11 days until Christmas and the 8^th day of the Festival of Lights, Hannukah. The young piano students I teach savor the holiday songs that bring light, joy and festivity for us all. They are angels – messengers of good news. Notice the smiles of these two surrounded by lights. How many of the children in our lives, whether relatives, students, patients, or ‘memories’ symbolize possibility, hope and the life energy our faith nurtures? Locate pictures of these ‘angels’ in your own life. As one five year old piano student said to me, ‘In my whole life I only wanted to play ‘Silent Night’ and you helped me! A joy for me to hear, a memory for me to share, a gift for me to remember this ‘angel’. Which angels bring you life, light and hope?

Hoy es el 50º jueves del año 2023, fiesta de San Juan de la Cruz, faltan 11 días para la Nochebuena y el 8º día de la Fiesta de las Luces, Hannukah.  Los jóvenes estudiantes de piano a quienes enseño se deleitan con las canciones navideñas que nos traen luz, alegría y festividad a todos.  Son ángeles, mensajeros de buenas noticias.  Fíjense en las sonrisas de ellos rodeados de luces.  ¿Cuántos niños hay en nuestras vidas, ya sean familiares, alumnos, pacientes o “recuerdos”, que simbolizan la posibilidad, la esperanza y la energía vital que alimenta nuestra fe?   Encuentren imágenes de estos “ángeles” dentro de su propia vida.  Como me decía un alumno de piano de cinco años: ” ¡Toda mi vida sólo he querido tocar “Noche de paz” y usted me ha ayudado!    Para mí ha sido una alegría escucharlo, un recuerdo por compartir, un regalo que me recuerde a ese “ángel”.  ¿Cuáles son los ángeles que te traen vida, luz y esperanza?

Shepherds and Angels

“Fear not” were the words spoken by the angel to the shepherds in Luke’s Gospel. These two words were followed by “I bring you good tidings of great joy.” This phrase has been the essence of our Christmas. As we experience the Incarnate Christ, we place our fears behind us. “Fear not.”

Pastores y ángeles

“No tengan miedo” fueron las palabras que el ángel dijo a los pastores en el Evangelio de Lucas. Junto a estas dos palabras se oyó ” Vengo a comunicarles una buena noticia de gran gozo”.  Esta frase ha sido la esencia de nuestra Navidad. Al experimentar a Cristo encarnado, dejamos atrás nuestros miedos. “No teman”.
