It’s time now to focus on those shepherds and angels of daily life!

First, let’s focus shepherds…
those who day after day keep watch, lead and guide, rescue and protect…
like parents and teachers and rescue workers.
These are persons whose faithful commitment of service
lead us to the crèche of our lives
where we behold the face of Emmanuel…God-with-us!

And let’s not forget the countless angels
who appear with unexpected, yet timely and provident messages of joy and hope…
They’re the ones who encourage us to hurry to see for ourselves
the wonder of God made flesh…
the continuous revelation of the incarnation…
God-is-with us!
Is that not now cause for renewed hope and unbounded joy!

Ha llegado el momento de prestar atención a los pastores y ángeles de la vida diaria.

Primero, concentrémonos en los pastores…
aquellos que día a día vigilan, dirigen y guían, rescatan y protegen…
como los padres, los maestros y los rescatistas.
Son personas cuyo fiel compromiso de servicio
nos dirigen hacia el pesebre de nuestras vidas
donde contemplamos el rostro del Dios Emmanuel… ¡Dios-con-nosotros!

Y no nos olvidemos de los innumerables ángeles
que aparecen con mensajes inesperados, pero oportunos y providentes de alegría y esperanza…
Son los que nos animan a darnos prisa para ver por nosotros mismos
la maravilla de Dios hecho carne…
la revelación continua de la encarnación…
¡Dios está con nosotros!
¡Acaso no es esto motivo de esperanza renovada y de alegría sin límites!

“In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, magi from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born King of the Jews? For we observed his star at his rising, and have come to pay him homage.”’ Matthew 2: 1-2

It’s a good time of year for stargazing, assuming you’re in the northern hemisphere (if you’re in the southern hemisphere: Hi! We love you from up here!) Our northern attention has always been drawn to the night sky in winter. Some reasons for this have been known for a long time:  the night’s longer this time of year. Others we’ve always felt but only understood relatively recently:  cold air holds less moisture, so the sky is less hazy and stars are more visible.  Still others are very new to us:  during the summer, we’re staring into the heart of the Milky way, where there are so many stars, they create their own light pollution and obscure each other, while in winter we’re staring out past the edges of the galaxy, and the relatively small number of stars there obscure each other less and so become more sharply visible. We’ve gained more and more knowledge of the stars and our place among them over the millennia.

Compared to modern astronomers, the magi knew next to nothing about the nature and movements of the stars.  And yet, they knew what the things they saw meant, and what to do about it. They may not have had many facts, but they had a lot of wisdom.

These nights, your vision is as clear as it’s likely to be all year long. You have more facts at your fingertips than the ancients could have ever imagined, and more become available every day. But as you watch the night sky tonight, the question isn’t how many facts you have about the stars;  it’s whether you have enough wisdom to read them.

Reveal yourself to me in the stars, O God. Write your purposes across the sky. Let me see you shining there, and make me wise enough to know what to do when I see you. Amen.

Cuando nació Jesús, en Belén de Judea, bajo el reinado de Herodes, unos magos de Oriente se presentaron en Jerusalén y preguntaron: «¿Dónde está el rey de los judíos que acaba de nacer? Porque vimos su estrella en Oriente y hemos venido a adorarlo». Mateo 2: 1-2

Es una buena época del año para contemplar las estrellas, suponiendo que te encuentres en el hemisferio norte (si estás en el hemisferio sur: ¡Hola! ¡Te queremos desde aquí arriba!) Nuestra atención nórdica siempre se ha visto atraída por el firmamento nocturno del invierno.  Algunas de las razones son conocidas desde hace tiempo: la noche es más larga en esta época del año.  Otras siempre las hemos sentido, pero sólo las hemos comprendido hace relativamente poco: el aire frío retiene menos humedad, de modo que el cielo está menos nublado y las estrellas se hacen más visibles.  Otras son nuevas para nosotros: en verano, miramos al corazón de la Vía Láctea, donde hay tantas estrellas que crean su propia contaminación luminosa y se ocultan entre sí, mientras que durante el invierno miramos más allá de los bordes de la galaxia, donde el número relativamente pequeño de estrellas disminuye y se hacen más visibles.  A lo largo de los milenios hemos ido aprendiendo más y más sobre las estrellas y nuestro lugar entre ellas.

December 7, 1941 was indeed a “Day of Infamy.” We remember those horrible events so long ago and shudder to know that mass destruction of human life is still happening today. Advent is a beautiful time of renewal. We can become closer to God as we become closer to one another. Let us ban the word “hate” from our vocabulary. Let us learn to listen attentively to what others say. Let us pray fervently for peace around the world. We can do this and spread joy to the world. Our Lord has come.

The Three Wise Men

On my table there are three “Wise Men” who stand without a matching Nativity set. They are without a home and because so many of our family have departed this world, we are without record from whence they came. The three have captured a place in my heart and so I keep them on display all year. Many times each day I see them and am reminded that Wise Men still seek Him.

We do not know why or how they met along their journey. We can only imagine what their journey was like. That star in the sky seemed to affirm their desire to quench a yearning for a promise fulfilled. That Light from above seemed to lead the three to a child they would recognize as All That Is. Their hearts overflowed with a fullness that had never before been experienced. Beyond time, beyond space, they were amazed by the Beatific Vision of pure love. They were totally absorbed by the energy from Who is, Was, and Will be. Wisdom had built a house within them. Beyond time, beyond space, these men became sanctified, beatified, and canonized as they knelt before this little one. They witnessed the Source of the salvation of every nation.

It must have been so difficult to leave that circle of love: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Wisdom told them not to return to Herod. Strangers no more, these three departed company and we can only imagine where life took them. Wherever they went, that amazing experience of Pure Love would hopefully make them disciples.

May our hearts kneel in awe of the Presence who lives in all of us from womb to tomb.

El 7 de diciembre de 1941 fue realmente un “Día de Infamia”.  Recordamos aquellos horribles acontecimientos ocurridos hace tanto tiempo y nos estremecemos al saber que la destrucción masiva de vidas humanas sigue sucediendo hoy en día.  El Adviento es un tiempo precioso de renovación.  Nos podemos acercar más a Dios si nos acercamos más entre nosotros.  Desterremos la palabra “odio” de nuestro vocabulario.  Aprendamos a escuchar atentamente lo que dicen los demás.  Oremos con fervor por la paz en todo el mundo.  Podemos hacer esto y contagiar de alegría al mundo.  Nuestro Señor ha llegado.

Los Tres Reyes Magos

Sobre mi mesa hay tres “Reyes Magos” que están sin un pesebre adecuado.  Están sin hogar y como muchos de nuestros familiares han dejado este mundo, desconocemos su origen. Los tres han ocupado un lugar en mi corazón y por eso los exhibo todo el año.  Muchas veces al día los veo y me recuerdan que los Reyes Magos aún siguen buscándole.

No sabemos por qué ni cómo se conocieron a lo largo del viaje.  Sólo podemos imaginar cómo fue su travesía.  Esa estrella en el cielo parecía afirmar su deseo de saciar el anhelo de una promesa cumplida.  Esa Luz de lo alto parecía guiar a los tres hacia un niño al que reconocerían como Todo Lo Que Es.  Sus corazones rebosaban de una satisfacción que nunca antes habían experimentado.  Más allá del tiempo y más allá del espacio, quedaron asombrados por la Visión Beatífica del amor más puro.  Fueron totalmente absorbidos por la energía de Quien es, Fue y Será.  La Sabiduría había construido una casa dentro de ellos.  Más allá del tiempo, más allá del espacio, estos hombres fueron santificados, beatificados y canonizados al arrodillarse ante este pequeño. Fueron los testigos de la Fuente redentora de todos los pueblos.

Debe haber sido muy difícil dejar ese círculo de amor: Jesús, María y José.  La sabiduría les dijo que no volvieran a Herodes.  Los tres dejaron de ser extraños y sólo podemos imaginar dónde les llevó la vida. Dondequiera que fueran, esa asombrosa experiencia de Amor Puro les convertiría con suerte en discípulos.

Que nuestros corazones se postren ante la Presencia del que habita en nosotros desde el vientre materno hasta la tumba.

Santa’s Prayer on Christmas Eve

The sleigh was all packed, the reindeer were fed,
      But Santa still knelt by the side of the bed.
“Dear Father,” he prayed “Be with me tonight.
     There’s much work to do and my schedule is tight.
I must jump in my sleigh and streak through the sky,
     Knowing full well that a reindeer can’t fly. I will visit each household before the first light;
     I’ll cover the world and all in one night.
With sleigh bells a-ringing, I’ll land on each roof,
Amid the soft clatter of each little hoof.
To get in the house is the difficult part,
     So I’ll slide down the chimney of each child’s heart.
My sack will hold toys to grant all their wishes.
     The supply will be endless like the loaves and the fishes.
I will fill all the stockings and not leave a track.
     I’ll eat every cookie that is left for my snack.
I can do all these things Lord, only through You,
     I just need your blessing, then it’s easy to do.
All this is to honor the birth of the One,
     That was sent to redeem us, Your most Holy Son.
So to all of my friends, lest Your glory I rob,

El trineo estaba lleno, los renos alimentados,
pero Santa seguía arrodillado al lado de la cama.

Tengo mucho trabajo por realizar y mi agenda está llena.
Debo saltar en mi trineo y atravesar el cielo,
Sabiendo muy bien que un reno no puede volar. 
Visitare cada hogar antes del amanecer;
recorreré el mundo entero en una sola noche.
Aterrizare en todos los tejados al son de las campanillas del trineo
y entre el suave ruido de cada pezuñita.
Entrar a la casa es la parte más difícil,
así que me deslizare por la
chimenea del corazón de cada niño.
En mi saco tendré juguetes para complacer todos los deseos.
Las provisiones serán infinitas, como los panes y los peces.

The Magi

The Bible says that a bright star guided the Magi from the east until it stopped “over the place where the child was,” and “when they entered the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother” (Matthew 1:24).

January 5^th is the eve of the arrival of the Three Wise Men. You can feel the excitement and magic of the holiday in the air.  The fresh evening breeze rushes in and the children and adults get ready to welcome throughout the night the Three Wise Men into their homes. It is the night when children go to bed very early…

The Three Kings Day or the Feast of the Epiphany is a holiday that commemorates the day when the three wise men, Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar, arrived with gifts for the infant Jesus. They followed the star to Bethlehem to show their adoration to the newborn Child.

The night of December 5th is the night when children’s hearts beat fast and when they close their eyes, they dream with excitement that the Three Wise Men from the East will bring them their longed-for gifts. They hope that the letter they sent so long ago with the heading “Dear Three Wise Men, Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar” has reached its recipient without any problems. The excitement and nervousness of the little ones is so great that, in the silence of the night, from thinking so much about the kings and gifts, they seem to hear the sound of their footsteps and the rustling of their silk robes in the corridors. The Gospel tells us that some wise men from the East were guided by a star to worship the Messiah who had just been born. After leaving the palace and being guided by the star, the magi found the child in a stable in Bethlehem, with Mary and Joseph. The Magi prostrated themselves before him and offered him gold, the metal of kings; frankincense, the offering of the gods; and myrrh, offered as an announcement of his future sufferings.

Nowadays, the feast of the Three Wise Men is full of traditions, customs such as cutting grass for the camels and putting it in a box under the bed, leaving milk and cookies for the kings. On January 6, the Three Wise Men go out in a parade and hand out candies to the children.

Let us keep alive this tradition which is remembered with great affection and enthusiasm by our elders as it marks the life of every child and remains with them for the rest of their lives.

May the star that led the Three Wise Men to meet the Messiah, guide your Advent in this year 2023 and may we keep alive the dreams of a child.

Los Reyes Magos

La Biblia dice que una estrella brillante guió a los magos desde el oriente hasta que se detuvo “sobre el lugar donde estaba el niño”, y “al entrar en la casa, vieron al niño con María su madre” (Mateo 1:24).

El 5 de enero es la víspera a la llegada de los Reyes Magos. Se puede sentir la emoción y la magia de la fiesta en el aire.  La brisa  fresca de la tarde se apresura y los niños y grandes se preparan para recibir a los tres Reyes Magos en sus hogares durante la noche. Es la noche en que niños van a la cama bien temprano…

El Día de los Reyes Magos o la Fiesta de la Epifanía es una festividad que conmemora el día en que los tres reyes magos, Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar, llegaron con regalos para el niño Jesús. Los Reyes Magos siguieron una estrella hasta Belén para mostrar su adoración al Niño recién nacido.

Esa noche del cinco de es una noche en la que los corazones infantiles palpitan aceleradamente y cuando cierran los ojos sueñan con ilusión que los Reyes Magos de Oriente les traigan los regalos anhelados. Esperan que la carta que enviaron hace tanto tiempo con el encabezamiento “Queridos Reyes Magos, Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar” haya llegado a su destinatario sin problemas. Es tanta la emoción y el nerviosismo de los más pequeños que, en el silencio de la noche, d

e tanto pensar en  los reyes y regalo, les parece oír el sonido de sus pasos y el roce de sus túnicas de seda por los pasillos. El Evangelio cuenta que unos magos llegados de Oriente fueron guiados por una estrella para que adorasen al Mesías que acababa de nacer. Tras abandonar el palacio y ser guiados por la estrella, los magos encontraron al niño en un establo en Belén, junto a María y José. Tras postrarse ante él y ofrecerle oro que es  el metal de los reyes; incienso que es la ofrenda de los dioses; y mirra ofrecida como anuncio de sus futuros padecimientos.

En la actualidad, la festividad de los Reyes Magos viene cargada de tradiciones, costumbres  como es la de cortar pasto para los camellos y ponerlo en una caja debajo de la cama, el poner leche y galletas para los reyes. El 6 de enero  los Magos salen en una cabalgata y  reparten caramelos a los niños.

Mantengamos viva esta tradición que los mayores recuerdan con mucho cariño e  ilusión y que marca la vida de todo  niño y lo acompaña toda la vida.

Que esa estrella que llevo  a los Tres Reyes de Oriente al encuentro con el Mesías, guie tu Adviento en este año 2023 y que podamos mantener viva esa ilusión de niño.

Advent is time of AMAZING, Synod time of listening, seeing, walking together.

Pope Francis tells: “The most amazing thing about this universe is that it contains creatures, woman and men, who possess the ability to observe with wonder and to “interrogate.”
“Never lose this sense of wonder, both in your searches and in your lives; may you always be driven by the love of truth and amazed by everything that each fragment of the universe offers.”

Let’s live an Advent of Amazement, Peace and Joy. Let us follow the Star that we can find in the signs of the times… May Divine Providence guide us, and may we see the Light that brings us the real longed peace.

Vivamos un Adviento de asombro, paz y alegría. Sigamos la Estrella en los signos de los tiempos… Que la Providencia Divina nos guíe y veamos la Luz que nos trae la verdadera paz tan anhelada.

Since I first saw this card on the Carmel of Reno website, it has spoken volumes to me.
It has been the star that
points the way to the Christ;
calls me to take the time for the long, slow journey of my life,
to sit and look at creation and let it draw me into the Trinity,
to brood over the life within myself: my life and Christ living in me.

This message is a reminder and a challenge-
not to make things and busy-ness the focus of my life;
rather, to see them as intruders in what my life is about,
limited necessities at times, but temporary intruders
to be set aside to allow the breath of the Spirit
to be recognized and invited in,
so that the stable of my spirit
can become an ongoing birthplace for Christ.

A glance at this card, framed and on the wall in my prayer place,
brings Advent to me and me to Advent
throughout the year.

Desde la primera vez que vi esta tarjeta en la página web del Carmelo de Reno, me ha hablado mucho.

As the days of November spill into December, Christmas decorations are found everywhere. Frequently, in the midst of hanging wreaths and lights and decorating trees is the unpacking of the Christmas creche. This advent, lets join together in making this ordinary task a Spiritual ritual.

Directions for the practice are adapted from the writings of poet theologian, John Shea. He suggests setting out the figurines individually, in what might be viewed as an inverted order, and invites us to add contemporary images (after the tradition of prescipios found in European churches and Art Museums).

A 2014 poem by John Shea sets the stage:

Crèche & Company

The 18th century Neapolitan crèche
on exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago
captures Christmas.
It has over 200 figures,
including 41 items of food and drink.
The usual crèche suspects
are woven into the bustle of the city.
The baby Jesus gestures to the king of Naples.
The wise men are next to bartenders,
shepherds mingle with merchants,
and the sheep share pasture.
with horses, cattle, chickens, dogs, and cats.
Jesus is born among people,
busy with the duties and pleasures.

So take a lesson.
Invite company
into your crèche.

and nuzzle it against Mary’s side.

Get everyone in.
Incarnation means
the sacred can surprise us
through the people and events,
of our ordinary life,
a life always more than we know.

 

A medida que los días de noviembre transcurren y nos acercamos a diciembre, las decoraciones navideñas aparecen por todas partes. Es frecuente que, en medio de las coronas, las luces y la decoración de los árboles, se desempaque el pesebre. Que este Adviento, nos ayude a unir esfuerzos para hacer de esta tarea ordinaria un ritual espiritual.

Las instrucciones para esta práctica fueron adaptadas de los escritos del poeta teólogo John Shea. Quien nos propone colocar las imágenes de forma individual, en un orden que podría considerarse invertido, y nos invita a añadir imágenes contemporáneas (siguiendo la tradición de los preceptos que se encuentran en las iglesias y museos de arte europeo).

Un poema publicado el 2014 por John Shea prepara el escenario:
