Anointing at Bethany
John 12:1-8

Come close with Mary, Martha, Lazarusso close the candles stir with their soft breath and kindle heart and soul to flame within us, lit by these mysteries of life and death. For beauty now begins the final movement in quietness and intimate encounter. The alabaster jar of precious ointment is broken open for the world’s true Lover.
The whole room richly fills to feast the senses with all the yearning such a fragrance brings. The heart is mourning but the spirit dances, here at the very center of all things, here at the meeting place of love and loss, we all foresee, and see beyond the cross.

Unción en Betania
Juan 12:1-8

Acércate a María, Marta y a Lázaro, aproxímate a las velas, muévelas  al ritmo de su suave aroma y enciende el corazón y el alma para que ardan dentro de nosotros, iluminados por estos misterios de la vida y de la muerte. Porque la belleza comienza ahora el movimiento final en la quietud y el encuentro íntimo.  Porque el frasco de un ungüento precioso se abre para el verdadero Amante del mundo.

Toda la habitación se llena ricamente para deleitar los sentidos con todo el anhelo que trae consigo tal fragancia. El corazón está de luto pero el espíritu baila, aquí en el centro mismo de todas las cosas, aquí en el lugar de encuentro del amor y la pérdida; todos lo prevemos y  vemos más allá de la cruz.

Raising of Lazarus
John 11: 1- 44

Fix your gaze on the illumination. How is this image traditional, how unusual?

In this illumination of the raising of Lazarus we are given a new perspective. We are not outside the tomb weeping and waiting. We are inside the tomb behind Lazarus awakening to the tunnel of white light beaming from the outside. At its center is Jesus. A death head moth spreads its patterned wings amidst the patterned wrappings of Lazarus’ shroud. The scene is a contrast between light and darkness. Christ is hardly recognizable, neither is Lazarus. The scene is a contrast between the powers of darkness and the powers of light. This is the pivotal scene in the Gospel which will put Jesus on the path to the cross–the real triumph of life over death, light over darkness.

Resurrección de Lázaro
Juan 11: 1-44

Fija tu mirada en la iluminación.  ¿Qué tan tradicional es esta imagen, qué tan inusual?

En esta iluminación de la resurrección de Lázaro se nos da una nueva perspectiva.  No estamos fuera de la tumba llorando y esperando.  Estamos dentro de la tumba, detrás de Lázaro, despertando al túnel de luz blanca que irradia desde el exterior.  En su centro está Jesús.  Una polilla con cabeza de muerte extiende sus alas estampadas entre las envolturas del sudario de Lázaro.  La escena es un contraste entre la luz y la oscuridad.  Cristo es difícilmente reconocible, como tampoco lo es Lázaro.  La escena es un contraste entre los poderes de las tinieblas y los poderes de la luz.  Esta es la escena central del Evangelio que pondrá a Jesús en el camino hacia la cruz: el verdadero triunfo de la vida sobre la muerte, la luz sobre las tinieblas.

2/22 Mary and Martha
Luke 10: 38–42

John’s Gospel tells us that Jesus loved Martha and her sister, Mary, as well as their brother Lazarus.

This illumination from the St. John’s Bible is part of a larger two-page spread entitled “The Luke Anthology” The panel with Martha and Mary keeps the focus on Christ. Note the words in gold, “there is only one thing”

As you read the text, imagine a range of tones as Jesus says, “Martha, Martha”

Rather than seeing this as a text, that pits one sister against another, try to see it as a reading that affirms that there are unique ministries that we need at particular times: someone needs to create the space, the home, in which we then need to sit and learn together.

2/22 María y Marta
Lucas 10: 38–42

El Evangelio de Juan nos dice que Jesús amaba a Marta y a su hermana María, así como a su hermano Lázaro.

Esta iluminación de la Biblia de San Juan es parte de una extensión más grande de dos páginas titulada “La Antología de Lucas”. El panel con Marta y María mantiene el enfoque en Cristo.  Ten en cuenta las palabras en oro, “sólo hay una cosa”.

Mientras lees el texto, imagina una variedad de tonos cuando Jesús dice: “Marta, Marta”.

En lugar de ver esto como un texto que enfrenta a una hermana contra otra, trata de verlo como una lectura que afirma que hay ministerios únicos que necesitamos en momentos particulares: alguien necesita crear el espacio, el hogar, en el que luego necesitamos sentarnos y aprender juntos.

It seems somewhat serendipitous, that Lent 2024 begins on Valentine’s Day, a time to celebrate love and friendship. Being a friend is one of the most important things we can do, one of the most appreciated, and one of the most difficult. Friendship is a real ministry. Join us this Lent as we endeavor to become a circle of friends. Each week on we will explore Jesus’s relationship with one or more of his friends as we know them through the gospels.

Parece algo fortuito que la Cuaresma de 2024 comience el día de San Valentín, un momento para celebrar el amor y la amistad.  Ser amigo es una de las cosas más importantes que podemos hacer, una de las más apreciadas y una de las más difíciles.  La amistad es un verdadero ministerio.  Les invitamos a que se unan a nosotras en esta Cuaresma mientras nos esforzamos por convertirnos en un círculo de amigos.  Cada semana iremos explorando la relación de Jesús con uno o más de sus amigos, tal como los conocemos a través de los evangelios.

The Holy Family lived in the Now.

                 Mary in the “Now” answered,
“Your Will be done.”
Joseph in the “Now” responded,
taking Mary as his wife.
The Holy Family in the “Now” fled
into the unknown.

A quilt I made a number of years ago titled “Trails” reminds me that there are many different paths people are called to travel – one small “Now” at a time. That means we stand in the “Now”– being still long enough to become aware of the gifts of the moment–looking deeper than the pain or joy of a situation to the opportunities to explore. In the quilt there are many directions to go with as many opportunities as the varied colors.

During my ongoing journey with cancer living in the “Now” has been my goal. The past and future mean very little but the “Now” is what I can respond to in hope. David Steindl-Rast defines hope as “radical openness for surprise–for the unimaginable.” Taking time to stand in the “Now” has enabled me to become more open to the opportunities of God’s surprises in my life—in the spirit of the Holy Family.

La Sagrada Familia vivió en el Ahora

María en el “Ahora” respondió,
“Hágase tu Voluntad”.
José en el “Ahora” respondió
tomando a María por esposa.
La Sagrada Familia en el “Ahora” huyó
hacia lo desconocido.

Un edredón que hice hace algunos años titulado “Senderos” me recuerda que existen diferentes caminos que las personas están llamadas a recorrer, un pequeño “Ahora” a la vez. Eso significa que nos quedamos en el “Ahora”, que permanecemos quietos el tiempo suficiente para darnos cuenta de los dones del momento, que miramos más allá del dolor o la alegría de una situación para explorar las oportunidades. En el edredón existen muchas direcciones a seguir, con tantas oportunidades como la variedad de colores.

Durante mi lucha contra el cáncer, mi objetivo ha sido vivir el “Ahora”.  El pasado y el futuro significan muy poco, pero el “Ahora” es lo que me permite responder con esperanza. David Steindl-Rast define la esperanza como una “apertura radical a la sorpresa… a lo inimaginable”.  Tomarme el tiempo para estar en el “Ahora” me ha permitido abrirme más a las oportunidades y sorpresas de Dios en mi vida, según el espíritu de la Sagrada Familia.

St. Joseph-Patron Saint of the Unexpected

Dear Joseph,

As I place the figurine of you in the manger beside Mary and Jesus, I am reminded that you are often known as the patron saint of the unexpected.

Mary’s pregnancy was unexpected

The visit from the angel telling you to trust Mary was unexpected.

Your role as guardian and protector of our Incarnate Savior was unexpected.

Angels and Shepherds surrounding you at the birth of Jesus was unexpected.

In all of these events, you were attentive to the voice of our Provident God.

As we prepare for Christmas, we ask that you intercede for us so that we too may respond gracefully to the unexpected in our lives.

We hope to share your openness to everyday epiphanies as we celebrate Emmanuel.

San José, Patrón de lo Inesperado

Querido José,

Al colocar tu imagen junto a María y Jesús en el pesebre, recuerdo que a menudo se te conoce como el patrón de lo inesperado.

El embarazo de María fue inesperado

La visita del ángel quien te dijo que confiaras en María fue inesperada.

Tu papel como guardián y protector de nuestro Redentor Encarnado fue inesperado.

Los ángeles y pastores que te rodearon durante el nacimiento de Jesús fueron inesperados.

En todos estos acontecimientos, estuviste atento a la voz de nuestro Dios providente.

Mientras nos preparamos para la Navidad, te pedimos que intercedas por nosotros para que también podamos responder con gracia a lo inesperado de nuestras vidas.

Esperamos poder compartir tu disposición a las epifanías de la vida diaria mientras celebramos la Navidad.

The inscrutable face of young Mary in this tapestry of the Annunciation draws us in. Her intense gaze lets us know that above all else, she is listening.  Whether she likes what she hears or is frightened by it, seems secondary to her expression of focus.  We wonder what is going through her mind.  Today we know how this scene will end:  Mary will agree to be the mother of Jesus and forever humanity is changed.  But in the moment captured in this scene, we see a Mary who does not yet know what her decision will be; a Mary with questions, rising fears, and doubt that she sees and hears an actual angel.

So many artists of the Annunciation depict a Mary who is beautiful, calm and confident as the glowing angel speaks.  This Mary appears so young. We may be astonished anew at the thought that God entrusted his Son into the body of a 15-year-old girl in an occupied country in a patriarchal system where she had no power.  Yet God had faith in Mary and has such faith in each of us. The waiting during Advent as Christmas draws near can seem so removed from the frightening and sometimes catastrophic events on the current world stage. We live in such uncertain times.  But let us reflect with this young Mary who listened and might have only heard uncertainty in all that she was asked to do.   Let us wait with this Mary as she weighs what she hears, filtering it through the events of her people, her faith in God, and the hopes of her heart.

El rostro inescrutable de la joven María en este tapiz de la anunciación nos cautiva. Su intensa mirada nos permite comprender que, por encima de todo, está escuchando.  Si lo que oye, le gusta o le asusta, parece secundario a su expresión de concentración.  Nos preguntamos qué estará pensando.  Hoy sabemos cómo terminará esta escena:  María aceptará ser la madre de Jesús y la humanidad cambiará para siempre.  Pero el momento captado de esta escena nos descubre a una María que aún no sabe cuál será su decisión; una María con preguntas, con miedos que aumentan y con dudas de que si ve y escucha a un ángel de verdad.

Muchos artistas de la Anunciación representan a una María que es hermosa, tranquila y confiada mientras habla con el ángel resplandeciente.  Esta María parece tan joven. Podemos asombrarnos una vez más al pensar que Dios confió a su Hijo dentro del cuerpo de una niña de 15 años que vivía en un país bajo un sistema patriarcal donde ella no tenía ningún poder. Sin embargo, Dios tuvo fe en María y la tiene también en cada uno de nosotros. La espera del Adviento, a medida que se acerca la Navidad, puede parecer tan alejada a los acontecimientos aterradores y a veces catastróficos de la actualidad mundial. Vivimos tiempos inciertos.  Pero reflexionemos con la joven María, que escuchó y tal vez sólo oyó incertidumbre en todo lo que se le pidió hacer.   Esperemos junto a esa María mientras pondera lo que oye, canalizando a través de los acontecimientos de su pueblo, su fe en Dios y las esperanzas de su corazón.
