About GlycoNet

Supported by the Government of Canada through the Strategic Science Fund (2024-2029) and Canada Foundation for Innovation‘s Major Science Initiatives Fund (2023-2029), GlycoNet is a pan-Canadian initiative bringing together researchers, industry and academic partners to develop solutions to unmet health needs through the study of glycomics.

The GlycoNet Story

GlycoNet builds on our world-leading network of glycomics researchers and trainees, government laboratories and industry partners. The Network addresses key challenges in human and animal health. GlycoNet’s research, in collaboration with our partners, leads to novel approaches for preventing and treating disease.

Our Vision

To deliver solutions to important health issues and improve quality of life of Canadians through glycomics.

Our Mission

  • Ensure that the Network and Canada are internationally recognized as the leader in glycomics research.
  • Deliver exceptional training in glycomics research and entrepreneurship
  • Bridge the translation gap between research and industry
  • Translate research advances into tangible benefits for Canada

Key Outcomes

  • Innovative and multidisciplinary research excellence in glycomics with an emphasis on human and animal health in Canada
  • Canada-wide curriculums in glycomics that support the training of highly qualified personnel (HQP)
  • New ventures and entrepreneurs to help the growth of Canadian bio-economy
  • Strategic partnerships with small/medium/large biotech and pharmaceutical companies to accelerate translational research
  • A one-stop global destination for applied glycomics solutions
  • Unified Canadian leadership in glycomics research

What is glycomics?

Glycomics is the study of carbohydrates (sugars) in biological systems. Carbohydrate chains, or glycans, are found in the cell membrane of every living cell and are key to almost every biological process. We have many ways to use and benefit from biological processes involving glycans to improve human health, animal health, and sustainability.
