Getting Around

Getting Around

Whether you're headed to Center City for a night out or traveling outside of the city for the weekend, here's your guide to public transit, biking, walking, and more in the region.

Home > Explore Philly > Getting Around

SEPTA

SEPTA is Philadelphia’s local transit agency, responsible for Regional Rail, subways, buses, and trolleys. SEPTA connects Center City with the surrounding neighborhoods and suburbs as far north as Trenton, New Jersey; and as south as Newark, Delaware.

Here’s what you’ll need to ride the system:

SEPTA Key is a reloadable, contactless chip card that offers a host of options for seamless travel on all SEPTA modes, and the self-serve flexibility of loading/reloading SEPTA fares to match your travel needs.

You can load money onto the Travel Wallet (to pay as you go) or you can load a daily/three-day/weekly/monthly pass. SEPTA Key cards are available at SEPTA Sales Offices and Fare Kiosks. Fare Kiosks can be found in all B and L Stations, at Bus Loops, at Center City Regional Rail Stations (Temple University, Jefferson Station, Suburban Station, William H. Gray III 30th Street Station and Penn Medicine Station) and at the Airport. Kiosks accept cash, credit, debit, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. Best part: you can reload your SEPTA Key online at SEPTAKey.org.

Quick Trips (single-ride tickets) are also available for the L, the B, and Regional Rail from Fare Kiosks. Cash is accepted on buses and trolleys—but you must use exact change. Cash and credit cards are accepted on Regional Rail. For more information, visit here.

SEPTA customers can also tap their contactless credit card, debit card, smart phone or watch to ride SEPTA buses, trolleys, subways, and Regional Rail. You can learn more here!

Tips & Tricks for First-Time Riders:

  • Plan your route ahead of time using the Indego app or Google Maps (select the bike option)
  • Always check the air in the tires, the brakes, and the bike chain before riding—think ABC!
  • Adjust the seat to hip height for a more comfortable ride
  • Bring your own helmet (or get a free one on an Indego class or group ride)
  • Firmly push the bike into the dock to end your trip

AROUND TOWN

With stations all over Philly and flexible pass options, Indego makes it simple for students to ride to class, work, or anywhere in between.

How Indego Works
  • Buy a pass at www.rideindego.com or in the Indego app
  • Find a station near you using the app or station map
  • Unlock a bike using your phone
  • Ride anywhere in the city
  • Return the bike to any Indego station when you’re done

LEAVING TOWN

Amtrak, departing from William H. Gray III 30th Street Station, is the quickest way to New York City or Washington, DC. Alternatively, going north, you can save money by taking SEPTA’s Trenton Line to Trenton Station and then transferring to New Jersey Transit for travel to New York’s Penn Station.

Intercity buses are another way out of town.
Buses depart from the terminal near Chinatown or JFK Boulevard west of 30th Street Station. Look up BoltBus, Megabus, Greyhound, and others for $1 flash sales and other discounts.

Explore New Jersey! Take PATCO from Center City,
with stops along Locust Street and at 8th and Market streets. PATCO rides on the Ben Franklin Bridge into Camden and the suburbs of Collingswood, Haddonfield, and Lindenwold. New Jersey Transit trains from 30th Street Station connect to Cherry Hill and Atlantic City.

From
Philadelphia International Airport, you can take a cab or rideshare to Center City. SEPTA’s Airport Line runs every 30 minutes on weekdays and every hour on Saturday and Sunday from 5am to midnight and stops at Temple University, Jefferson Station, Suburban Station, and William H. Gray III 30th Street Station. Several shuttle van companies have good rates, especially for groups; call in advance to reserve.
