Mission & Vision
Mission Statement
The CAJ promotes excellence in journalism, encouraging investigative journalism.
It serves as the national voice of Canadian journalists, and upholds the public’s right to know.
It speaks on behalf of journalists, and in their interest, on various matters, including:
- protection of sources to ensure those who come forward to speak with journalists are not harassed or identified if they choose not to be
- freedom of and access to information, providing transparency in relation to those who should be held to account
- the aim that newsrooms strive to represent the communities they serve. This includes representation and diverse lived experience from underrepresented communities such as Indigenous, Black, racialized, ethnic or religious minorities, people with physical and/or neurological disabilities, or 2SLGBTQI+
- the role that technology plays in journalism work
- support of independent and local media in the Canadian news landscape and industry
The CAJ speaks in support of the highest quality journalism through its work from the arm’s length Ethics Advisory Committee.
It works to recognize the best in Canadian journalism with a particular focus on investigative work through its awards program.
The CAJ develops both formal and informal professional development opportunities, providing emerging and seasoned journalists with the skills and knowledge they need to continue growing in their careers.
Vision
The CAJ is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides advocacy and professional development for journalists across Canada.
