U.S. NHTSA reinstates billions in fines on gas-guzzling automakers

So goes the headline in the only article I could find that covered this story in any depth this morning. Right, an obvious electric car pushing organization. Just who do they think will pay these fines? Trump had suspended the CAFE Standard that auto makers had said were too difficult to make. But in Biden’s move to reverse anything Trump did to make our U.S. economy run, now moves to automakers. Our cars soon will be made of plastic. Unsafe at any speed. As for the working man’s truck? Forget about it.

The comparison argument that EV’s can make the standard thus no reason Detroit can is absurd on the face of it. Where are all these EV’s coming from? Who is going to pay for them? No doubt more checks from Uncle Sam. Worse they have designed a monopoly game of trading “credits”.

Anyone else recall the “cash for clunkers?”  Pouring concrete into engine blocks on perfectly working automobiles. Coming soon. You Betcha. The man said he was going to do it.

Way to go Joe.

Electrek:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ruled that heightened fines on automakers that fail to meet Corporate Average Fuel Economy requirements on 2019 and later vehicles would be reinstated. The decision is a big hit to high-polluting automakers and the lobby group that supports them, and a win for EV makers.

The decision comes after years of fighting over a policy adopted in 2016 under President Obama that would apply to 2019 and later model year cars. The policy increased the fines for missing average fuel economy targets from $5.50 to $14 per .1 mpg per vehicle, in response to a 2015 law meant to catch old government penalties up to inflation. This is the first significant increase in this penalty since CAFE rules were first established in 1975 (the penalty was originally $5, then $5.50 since 1997).

Automakers who manage to stay within the limits gain credits that can be sold to other automakers who would otherwise be penalized. Automakers’ compliance or lack thereof can be found in DOT’s CAFE dashboard, where it can be seen that FCA missed the 40.9 mile-per-gallon target by nearly 11 mpg in 2020 (CAFE mpg is not calculated the same way as normal mpg and is more generous, thus the high numbers).

While automakers have long made the argument that compliance with such high CAFE targets is technologically impossible, the dashboard shows that Tesla exceeded the same 40.9 mpg target by 685 mpg. Surely other automakers with a century of experience can do better than 1/20th of Tesla’s efforts?

That risk seems to have turned out poorly for the automakers, as they’ll be writing some big checks for their noncompliance soon. The final rule takes effect 60 days after its publication in the federal register, and automakers who didn’t plan properly to increase their efficiency and incorporate more EVs into their fleet will continue paying these penalties for years to come – much of which is likely to end up in their EV competitors’ pockets via the trading of credits.

Coming to our town soon.

DOT and HHS conspire to ‘reduce’ driving

….but here we go. I guess we could say we knew this was coming. All of the LaHood’s previous statements would lead us to this. The mandate for those new Black Box requirement sure should have given us a heads up. But to put this together with DHS? They want us to “narrow our streets”?? Not one new road will be funded. Not one. Back in May, 2010 I posted: LaHood: “We are going to coerce people out of their cars”

On May 21, 2010 LaHood told reporters at the National Press Club that the “Partnership for Sustainable Communities’ his department had formed with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Housing—sometimes known as the “livability initiative”–was designed to “coerce” people out of their cars.

The moderator later asked: “Some conservative groups are wary of the livable communities program, saying it’s an example of government intrusion into people’s lives. How do you respond?”

“About everything we do around here is government intrusion in people’s lives,” said LaHood. “So have at it.” -(an honest man).

As we know, elections have consequences, the wish now comes true. Withholding funds to States until they come under the boot of our infamous leader. Here we go:

LaHood and Sebelius used the press conference to release a proposed set of actions their agencies and Congress can take to advance the health initiative. Congress could withhold federal transportation funds until states develop and implement aggressive vehicle miles traveled reduction goals and public engagement campaigns highlighting the health impacts of automobile use. State DOTs and legislatures could also levy a health excise fee on auto purchases to fund cycling, walking and transit infrastructure. As the nation’s largest insurer, HHS would revise underwriting standards to reflect the risks of high-mileage communities, and pair medical treatment with interventions to introduce customers and communities to non-auto transportation. Tax benefits for automobile parking would be rescinded, and the NHTSA would move immediately to require automakers to install ignition interlocks on all new vehicles.

Ignition interlocks? We are all going to have to breath into a machine before we can drive. Are you nuts? The cost of this? Use a treadmill for 30 minutes before the lock opens? Where does this end?

Standing side by side with many state DOT heads, US DOT Secretary Ray La Hood and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today announced a new public safety campaign to encourage less driving, lower speeds, and encourage more cycling and walking to meet the nation’s transportation needs.

“The use of motor vehicles, like smoking, heart disease and other public health threats, pose a grave risk to our children, friends and neighbors,” said Secretary Sebelius.

“For too long, the assumption has been that the negative impacts of auto travel are just the price we must pay for modern life”, said Secretary LaHood, “Well, no longer. It’s time to build a people-centered transportation system. We have the tools and policies to make change now, and we need to get to work.” LaHood urged DOTs and municipalities to begin immediately by reducing speed limits on residential streets, narrowing streets, and installing protected cycling facilities. LaHood also pointed to the benefits of the change, citing the continuing decline in vehicle travel nationwide. “Cities, counties and states no longer need to pour money into new infrastructure that will serve fewer and fewer drivers while their existing roads crumble. We’ll be doing our pocketbooks and the climate a favor while we reactivate our streets and improve public health”.

Black Boxes mandated by Feds for all new cars

Time to put an end to all of this. This will have enormous consequences in this invasion into our lives. Tracking our every move. Is this the America we want? Stand up Conservatives and take a stand. GOP is dead in the water as far as I am concerned. Another Czar goes after our freedom.

The feds will mandate next month that all new cars be fitted with a black box, according to news reports. So-called black boxes record information about speed, seat belt use and brake application.

Now they will make the installation of these device mandatory under federal law. If we are to gauge the reaction of the corporate media, this story is not very important. Outside of industry and technology publications, the story was not reported.

Computer chip manufacturer Intel showed off its event recorder last year following the Toyota recall. “With new vehicles, there will very likely be video cameras inside and outside,” said Intel’s chief technology office, Justin Rattner, in a July, 2010, interview. “It’s not particularly new or stunning, but when you combine the cameras with GPS, you’re geo-tagging the video.”

In other words, your car – like your smart phone – may soon become a surveillance evice and high-tech snooping will be mandated by the federal government.
