New tariffs? We already have tariffs on 12,000 products

If we think the the US does not impose tariffs, think again. Before we get our knickers in a knot, let’s take a look back.

The Truth. We already impose over 12,000 tariffs on imports. In a story that appeared in Business Insider back in October of 2010, during the reign of Obama and Clinton, we learned that as far as tariffs are concerned, we are already knee-deep in applying tariffs to our favorite swamp benefactor businesses. Surprised? So when Congress gets on its high horse and tells us that we will have a trade war, ask them about the imposed tariffs on American products that happen to have great lobbyists, and are surviving. “Free Trade?”

Obama’s economic adviser Austan Goolsbee told CNBC a tariff “destroys more jobs than it creates.”

If so, then Obama was a prolific jobs destroyer. There was a 31% tariff on Chinese solar panels. There was a 35% tariff on Chinese tires.

That last one destroyed 100,000 jobs. In China.

“Obama’s decision may affect the employment of 100,000 tire workers in China and may bring an aggregated loss of $1 billion to China’s tire exporters,” Fan Rende, chairman of China Rubber Industry Association, said at the time.

We give presidents the power to impose tariffs.

They use it.

And they help the United States in the continuous trade wars. H/T:  Don Surber

So when the media tells you that applying tariffs to Steel and aluminum will start a trade war, and that we are sacrificing agriculture for steel and will be hit the hardest, perhaps it is because they have enjoyed and benefitted the most from the tariffs the swamp has imposed on imports. Here are a few of them:

Most vegetables — 20% tariff

Asparagus and sweet corn — 21.3% tariff

Apricot, cantaloupe, and dates — 29.8% tariff

Canned tuna — 35% tariff

Shelled peanuts — 131.8% tariff

Garlic or onion powder — 29.8% tariff

Tobacco — 350% tariff

European meats, truffles, and Roquefort cheese — 100% tariff

French jam, chocolate, and ham — 100% tariff

Most auto parts — 25% tariff

Miscellaneous ship parts — 50% tariff

Chinese tires — 35% tariff

Sneakers — 48% tariff

Brooms — 32% tariff

Top Dem Lawmaker: Democrats Will Not Pass USMCA Trade Agreement

It didn’t take a crystal ball to figure out the intentions of the Democrats who soon will control the House. Always interesting for them now that they are showing their hand and how wise they are.. Mind you, not one former President in decades has attempted to right the ship regarding our trade relations.

But now, these House members, many of whom we have never heard of before, will make sure the brakes are applied to our economy. I am sure our new  “Valley Girl” Cortez will be right on board with this concept.

Otherwise filibustering Maria, he is clueless. But then, Trump does have his magic wand!

Rep. Matt Cartwright, the newly elected co-chair of the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC) joined Maria Bartiromo on Sunday Morning Futures this morning.

Cartwright told Maria Bartiromo Democrats will not sign President Trump’s USMCA trade agreement to replace the ruinous Nafta trade agreement.

Maria Bartiromo: Just to close the loop on the USMCA, am I right to assume you will not vote for this deal as it is written right now?

Rep. Cartwright (D-PA): No, unless it is made clear somehow that this is only a temporary position, that we are going to move on to broadening its effect to the entire manufacturing sector in this country.

UPDATE: Our man on the beat, Mustang added this comment –

I love the fact that this congressman, who’s job it is to know the US Constitution, doesn’t know that the Senate, not the House, consents to treaties.

President Trump told reporters on Sunday morning he will end Nafta and give Congress the choice between his USMCA or nothing.

Democrats would rather kill the US economy and have nothing.

19 Facts About The Deindustrialization Of America That Will Make You Weep >

Obama meets to sell out USA one more time, recall NAFTA?

The three amigos, Canada, Mexico and the USA, are meeting today in an attempt to sell out the USA one last time. How easy it is to forget what NAFTA has done to us. Buried with all that happened yesterday was a Trump speech worthy of some attention. What perked me up was Trump indicating he wanted to re-negotiate the NAFTA treaty as well as his opposition to TPP. One thing was running Mexican trucks up our gullet. Let’s roll back the clock and do a recall. Obama/We pay to fix Mexico’s trucks to meet Obama’s new EPA standards that he set. Makes sense.

The Obama administration announced a proposal last week to resurrect a controversial program that gives Mexican cargo trucks access to American highways.  (New York Times, Jan. 6, 2011)

According to a NAFTA arbitration panel, a cross-border trucking program included in the agreement requires the United States to allow trucks from Mexico and Canada access to American highways.  (Secretariat File No. USA-MEX-98-2008-01)

But first, because Mexicans would not pay for meeting our EPA standards, we did. Nice. Then we have the security issues, but hey, what’s a few more Mexicans, terrorists, or whatever.

U.S. pays to upgrade Mexican Trucks             mexico trucks

In the latest effort to accommodate its cherished trade partner in the south, the U.S. government is paying to upgrade outdated Mexican trucks that hemorrhage illegal amounts of exhaust on their trips north to deliver merchandise.

Since the Mexican truckers have no intention of fixing the problem, Uncle Sam has stepped in to save the environment. U.S. taxpayers have picked up the cost to replace old mufflers on dozens of trucks and many more are scheduled to be upgraded by the middle of this year. The unbelievable story was reported this week by an Arizona newspaper that says replacing the old mufflers with new catalytic converters will reduce harmful diesel emissions by up to 30%. Full story here  Judicial Watch

Mexican government says it will ease its trade sanctions against U.S. imports only after its trucks are allowed to cross the border.

Sanctions? Juan really…

Juan Carlos Munoz, president of Mexico’s National Chamber of Motor Transport of Freight, said Mexican trucks cannot meet U.S. environmental emissions standards, which effectively shuts them out of the market.

Mexican oil companies “do not have sufficient capacity to supply the diesel suitable for these new technologies” required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Munoz said after meeting with Mexico’s transportation secretary.   From: All Headline News  :

Mexico Trucks rolling across America – U.S. pays for upgrades

Hot Air UPDATE:   The first Mexican truck admitted with full access to US highways arrived 10 weeks after Obama imposed new fuel-efficiency regulations on big-rigs and other heavy transport trucks, along with new emission targets.  Officials of the trucking industry lined up shoulder to shoulder with Obama for a photo op in August, when the new regulations were issued, but a few journalists who still retain critical thinking capabilities reported that the industry officials’ complaisance was not replicated among independent owner-operators.

Besides fuel-efficiency regulations, the US trucking industry has also been hit with a new set of safety regulations.

The first Mexican carrier is set to roll deep into the U.S. interior within days, but American trucking union leaders and two California congressmen aren’t giving up on stopping the cross-border trucking program. Texas Perry and his Globalist Policies – Agenda 21?

Gulag Bound posted this story on Perry back on August the 18th. I have been waiting for someone, anyone but me to pick it up and move it along. I didn’t want to break a bubble, or give the Dems ammo, or be accused of being one of the tin foil hat crowd. Ok… no one is game, so I will. I have gone to the orginal sources, so here we go, so it looks like Gulag has this one down. You decide, is it just some conspiracy story? Meanwhile, the Dems are painting Perry as dumb. Ed over at Hot Air – Gee aren’t Republicans dumb meme, may be onto somthing, though, Perry, is dumb as a fox.

Texas “Open for Business”
While Perry is staking his campaign on Texas being the top net jobs creator, Perry’s version of Texas being “Open for Business” isn’t about low taxes and less regulation as much as it is about doing business with foreign companies, including selling off Texas’ sovereign land and public assets to foreign creditors, an issue which Perry’s first television ad uses to take aim at President Obama.

Aside from the P3s,- (Public-Private Partnerships) Texas has 20 active deals going with the Chinese and has 32 foreign trade zones (FTZs), a vehicle to ease the flow of foreign goods into the United States that are chalk full of tax breaks for importers. RH Group:

China Investment Monitor

Perry’s office promoted these FTZs in a document entitled Foreign Trade Zones: Texas Wide Open for Business  Texas leads the Nation with 31 FTZ’s more than any other State– be sure and look at the above link for detail.

A recent Washington Post article  titled” “Perry welcomed Chinese firm despite security concerns”-  documents Perry’s work to get Chinese government-owned telecommunications company Huawei, to base its U.S. operations in Texas, a company that the U.S. government has deemed a threat to national security noting that “three times since 2008, a U.S. government security panel has blocked Huawei from acquiring or partnering with U.S. companies because of concerns that secrets could be leaked to China’s government or military.”

After a months-long courtship that included a trip to China, where he dined with the company’s chief executive, Perry announced that telecommunications firm Huawei Technologies would base its U.S. operations in Plano. In a video of that October 2010 event — now playing on YouTube, courtesy of the governor’s office — Perry praised the company’s “really strong worldwide reputation” and its chairman, Ren Zhengfei, whose straight talk he said reminded him fondly of West Texans.

Three times since 2008, a U.S. government security panel has blocked Huawei from acquiring or partnering with U.S. companies because of concerns that secrets could be leaked to China’s government or military.

Please take the time to watch this video for the investment China has made in Texas, including  600,000 acres in the Texas oil fields.

Perry’s coziness with the Chinese and foreign investors exposes a huge weakness in his right flank — illegal immigration and open borders. The Trans Texas Corridor has been linked to the global plan to economically integrate North America, with the eventual goal of a common security perimeter modeled after the European Union. Perry ushered in in-state tuition for illegals and has long been an obstacle to immigration reform or any Arizona-style immigration law. As  Gulag Bound adds:

Perry’s record paints a much different picture than what candidate Perry would have us believe — that he’s a states rights, Constitutionally limited government conservative that’s responsible for the “Texas miracle.” In reality, he’s more like an Agenda 21 globalist willing to sell America to the highest bidder.

If you think things are going to be better with Romney, think again: From Washington Post article

Front-runner Mitt Romney has vowed to “get tough” on trade with China and called the superpower one of the “worst offenders” of global trade rules, suggesting in an interview that the United States must clamp down on China’s use of pirated technologies.

Romney’s former investment company, Bain Capital, worked on behalf of at least two Chinese companies trying to acquire U.S. technology firms. One case involved Huawei, which Bain joined in its failed bid to buy the software firm 3Com. Romney left Bain Capital in 1999, and aides say he had no role in those deals.

Ed Morrissey at Hot Air says the candidates are chosen.Could this become a two man race?  “Assuming that we see no other late entries, the subject of my prior post, and that Perry makes no major missteps that derail his bid, the Texas governor has a pretty clear shot at making himself into the alternative to Mitt Romney that grassroots Republicans have sought all year”. There is nothing like going to Governor Perry’s own words on various matters. Check out an earlier post of mine: Rick Perry-Watch out for the dishonest ‘tell’ -with much on NAFTA.

The following post is from his Speech entitled: Gov. Rick Perry’s Remarks to the Border Summit.

Office of the Governor Rick Perry of the State of Texas

http://governor.state.tx.us/news/speech/10688/

Bi-National Health:

“Legislation authored by border legislators Pat Haggerty and Eddie Lucio establishes an important study that will look at the feasibility of bi-national health insurance. This study recognizes that the Mexican and U.S. sides of the border compose one region, and we must address health care problems throughout that region. That’s why I am also excited that Texas Secretary of State Henry Cuellar is working on an initiative that could extend the benefits of telemedicine to individuals living on the Mexican side of the border”.

In Texas, we recently placed a strong emphasis on preventative care when we expanded access to Medicaid for more low-income children by making the Medicaid enrollment process simpler. We allocated an additional $4 billion to the Medicaid program, and more than $900 million to the Children’s Health Insurance Program. (See Post Script)

But the effort to combat disease and illness requires greater cooperative efforts between our two nations. It is a simple truth that disease knows no boundaries. An outbreak of drug-resistant tuberculosis, for example, endangers citizens of both our nations. We have much to gain if we work together to expand preventative care, and treat maladies unique to this region.

Education:

We must say to every Texas child learning in a Texas classroom, “we don’t care where you come from, but where you are going, and we are going to do everything we can to help you get there.” And that vision must include the children of undocumented workers. That’s why Texas took the national lead in allowing such deserving young minds to attend a Texas college at a resident rate. Those young minds are a part of a new generation of leaders, the doors of higher education must be open to them. The message is simple: educacion es el futuro, y si se puede.

NAFTA:

The fruits of NAFTA have just begun to ripen. At the same time, we must not allow the roots of the tree to become poisoned. The NAFTA agreement not only signaled a new era of economic possibility, but a new era of bi-national cooperation. That is why it is wrong, and inherently detrimental to our relationship with Mexico for the U.S. Congress to pursue a protectionist policy that forbids Mexican trucks from U.S. roadways. see Rick Perry-Watch out for the dishonest ‘tell’

Open Borders:

President Fox’s vision for an open border is a vision I embrace, as long as we demonstrate the will to address the obstacles to it. An open border means poverty has given way to opportunity, and Mexico’s citizens do not feel compelled to cross the border to find that opportunity.

We share a bond as neighbors, and we find our culture north of the Rio Grande to be increasingly defined by the strong traits of people of Hispanic descent.

Today, as we look to the south, we see a rising sun. It is perched above a people whose best days are in front of them. Let us endeavor to make the most of this new day through a new dialogue. Let us work together to combat disease, expand trade and provide educational opportunities. If we do, there are no limits to what we can accomplish for the betterment of all of our citizens. Thank you, and God bless you”

Post Script: Illegal immigrants can get in-state tuition at Texas universities. Neither employers nor state agencies are required to run job applicants through a federal database to determine their legal status. Rick Perry for President – watch for the dishonest “tell”

This is amazing isn’t it? Everyone just sitting on pins and needles to see if we will be blessed with Rick Perry’s entry”

Texas Governor Rick Perry will upend the Republican presidential primary with his entry this weekend, CNN’s latest national poll shows.  He starts off in a virtual tie with Mitt Romney, 17/15, with his nearest competitors at 12%.  Perhaps most surprisingly, Michele Bachmann isn’t among them — and her support gets cut almost in half with Perry’s candidacy. Hot air

Some of us wonder if we really choose our candidate for President. Are they pre-selected by others? Before you stop reading this as just another conspiracy blog, hang with me. Have you noticed the drum beat is picking up for Rick Perry? How the media is fawning over whether he is going to run? Now we hear from Mr. Perry that he is getting a calling. His civic duty, his moral duty as defined by his wife. He headed up Gore’s Presidential campaign in Texas. Soon thereafter he had a GOP conversion. OK.. maybe he is cool, and I am just overly cautious. How did that last selection process work out for us? So lets this time, keep our eyes open and watch for the “tell”. I will open with a one important one that I am picking up.

A “tell” :

A tell in poker is a change in a player’s behavior or demeanor that is claimed by some to give clues to that player’s assessment of his hand. A player gains an advantage if he observes and understands the meaning of another player’s tell, particularly if the tell is unconscious and reliable. Sometimes a player may fake a tell, hoping to induce his opponents to make poor judgments in response to the false tell. More often, people try to avoid giving out a tell, by maintaining a poker face regardless of how strong their hand is.

NAFTA Superhighway plans advance south Texas governor, Mexico agree to extend Trans-Texas Corridor

The Trans-Texas Corridor, part of the NAFTA Superhighway projected to link the United States with Canada and Mexico as an integral cog of the North American Union, is back on the agenda after Texas Governor Rick Perry lied in claiming that the proposal was dead earlier this year.

The open plan to merge the US with Mexico and Canada and create a Pan-American Union networked by a NAFTA Superhighway has long been a Globalist brainchild, but fierce opposition to the plan from activists across the country has stalled the plan at least temporarily.

A key component of the NAU transport system was the proposed Trans Texas Corridor, a massive 4,000 mile network of highways that were to be sold to the Spanish company Cintra and operated as toll roads – creating a huge new tax on the American people which would be paid directly to a foreign-owned private company.

Texas Governor and Bilderberg invitee Rick Perry launched a PR stunt in January when he claimed that the Trans Texas Corridor was dead, when in reality as Jerome Corsi and others pointed out, the project was merely to have its name changed and its design slightly altered.

Perry and his statement on Open Borders:

That is why it is wrong, and inherently detrimental to our relationship with Mexico for the U.S. Congress to pursue a protectionist policy that forbids Mexican trucks from U.S. roadways. It is bad public policy, and it violates the terms of the NAFTA agreement we agreed to. Mexican trucks that meet our safety standards should be given the same access to U.S. roads as our Canadian neighbors to the north.

President Fox’s vision for an open border is a vision I embrace, as long as we demonstrate the will to address the obstacles to it. An open border means poverty has given way to opportunity, and Mexico’s citizens do not feel compelled to cross the border to find that opportunity.http://governor.state.tx.us/news/speech/10688/

Then we have Illegal immigrants can get in-state tuition at Texas universities. Neither employers nor state agencies are required to run job applicants through a federal database to determine their legal status. Obama and Mexico agree to trucking across borders

So, is the EPA going to give Mexico a “waiver”.. but of course..and how many Millions of our bucks did Zero give away? And Chicago’s Daley who was Sec. of Commerce under Clinton is up to his eyeballs in it.

President Barack Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Thursday will announce a plan to open up U.S. highways to Mexican trucks, removing a longstanding roadblock to improved relations between the North American allies. An Obama administration official said the two leaders have agreed to a phased-in plan that would authorize both Mexican and U.S. long-haul carriers to engage in cross-border operations, provided that the Mexican trucks meet U.S. safety standards.  NY Post
