Ilan Omar Used Foreign Propaganda Script When Grilling Elliot Abrams

Home Sweet Home
Mogadishu

The only question I had of Rep, Omar was who gave you your attack points at the time of the Foreign Relations Committee hearing with Diplomat Abrams?

You seemed to have a wealth of decades old information considering you were still wandering the cesspool city called Mogadishu when the events you were discussing occurred.

A comparison of texts shows that Rep. Ilan Omar cribbed from Qatar’s state-owned Al Jazeera to script her diatribe against senior American diplomat Elliott Abrams.

Al Jazeera ran a story, “Who is Elliott Abrams, US special envoy for Venezuela?” on February 12. It had no byline.

Omar recycled the story in her scripted attack against Abrams at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on February 13. The video of the hearing shows that Omar did not publicly inform the Committee that she was quoting from a foreign state-funded propaganda source.

The key themes from the Al Jazeera article match with Omar’s comments to Abrams, and appear in the same order. Some of the phrasing is similar and sometimes identical. Here is one for comparison:

First theme: Helping Nicaraguan contras and pardoned by Bush

Al Jazeera: “In 1991, he [Abrams] pleaded guilty to two counts of misleading Congress about the Reagan administration’s efforts to help the Nicaraguan guerrillas (known as the Contras) during a period when Congress had banned such aid. He was later pardoned by George HW Bush.”

Omar to Abrams: “Mr. Adams [sic], in 1991, you pleaded guilty to two counts of withholding information from Congress regarding your involvement in the Iran-Cortra [sic] affair, for which you were later pardoned by President George H. W. Bush.”

This writer, as a former graduate school professor, would have failed a student for cribbing words, facts, and narratives without citing the source. A quick check of online plagiarism detection services shows that Omar did plagiarize her material:

This has to be the ultimate insult from Pelosi. Appointing this piece of work to this committee. Yet no one is reporting what she was about at the recent hearing on Venezuela with Elliot Abrahms.

This no less from the :  Daily Beast

Omar’s comportment at the hearing, as well as her obvious belief that the United States is an imperialist and reactionary nation that by its very nature abuses human rights, should alone be reason enough to have her removed before she can do real damage.

The Daily Beast of all things takes an interesting look at her charges and worth a ride over.

The first time we hear from Mogadishu Omar and what a rare treat this was.

The envoy came to testify not be confirmed but you would never know it. I suggest she knows nothing of what she speaks, but rather was given her talking points. Came to learn nothing. She barley can read English.

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minnesota, shared a heated exchange with the special envoy to Venezuela Elliott Abrams during a House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee meeting.

The House Foreign Affairs Committee heard testimony from U.S. experts about the growing humanitarian and political crisis engulfing Venezuela. One of those testifying was Elliott Abrams, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s newly appointed Special Envoy on Venezuela in the State Department, who found himself in a viral moment.

That came after Abrams read his opening statement, defining the U.S. mission as one of defending the nation’s only independent body, the National Assembly that elected Juan Guaido as its head, and which the U.S. now views as the arm of government, and Guaido as Venezuela’s only freely elected leader.  U.S. policy, Abrams said, was to aid the Venezuelan people, and to work in conjunction with other nations to help the people of Venezuela in their effort to restore democracy. He emphasized that the U.S. did not favor arming Maduro’s opponents, and supported a peaceful democratic transition.

….

Omar’s performance clearly was in sync with the Code Pink demonstrators who interrupted the hearing at its start and had to be removed by security. The Code Pink crew yelled in defense of the Maduro government, and had posters attacking Abrams as a “war criminal.”
