Youth Climate Summit Alumni Joins Greenpeace Voyage to the Sargasso Sea

YCS Alumni, Zahra Trott, embarked on a five-day voyage to the Sargasso Sea aboard Greenpeace International’s Artic Sunrise vessel in May. The primary objective of Ms. Trott’s voyage was to seek out the elusive Sargassum seaweed mats that house and support a plethora of iconic species. The Greenpeace expedition raised awareness for the North Atlantic’ region’s importance as part of a global network of ocean sanctuaries, which is one of Greenpeace International’s three priority sites for protection under the new Global Ocean Treaty. Protection of the Sargasso Sea is essential to meet the global target of safeguarding at least thirty percent of the world’s oceans by 2030.

BUEI Explorer Camps -Summer 2023

BUEI hosted a captivating series of camps throughout the summer which made for a truly remarkable season of discovery.

Despite the outside heat, campers delved into the Arctic and Antarctica during “Chilly Science” week, cooling down with a special treat as they learned how to make ice cream.

During “Wicked, Wild Weather” week, campers explored extreme weather phenomena, including hurricanes and storms, offering a fascinating exploration of Earth’s atmosphere.

The popular “Shipwrecks and Pirates” theme set sail again in August, enabling campers to craft pirate ships and savor Hardtak, a pirate delicacy reminiscent of historical voyages.

The summer of 2023 ended with a plunge into the “Deep Sea and the Abyss”. Campers learned about deep-sea creatures and participated in engaging science labs that seamlessly fused hands-on activities with educational content.

Earth Reporters at BUEI

BUEI successfully combined learning, adventure, and environmental awareness during two weeks of Earth Reporter Summer Camps designed to engage young explorers aged twelve to fourteen.

Campers immersed themselves in the world of underwater archaeology during “Archaeology Beneath the Sea: A Dive into Maritime Mysteries” week in July. Participants took a deep dive into shipwrecks and the hidden relics through hands-on activities and observations of the Shipwreck Gallery in BUEI’s Ocean Discovery Centre.

Excursions to the National Museum, The Bermuda National Archives and the Bermuda School of Art enriched the camp experience, allowing campers to bridge historical artifacts with interactive learning.

During “Earth Reporter’s Biodiversity Week: Nurturing Environmental Advocacy” in August, campers were empowered to become advocates for our planet with their photography and writing on biodiversity and environmental consciousness.

Campers engaged with Bermuda’s native and endemic species with a visit to Sherwin Nature Reserve and snorkeling at the Warwick Academy Marine Science Centre which provided an immersive marine life encounter, and a microscope-enabled observation of plankton which brought the microcosm to life.

The success of these transformative camps, which incorporated the Young Reporters for the Environment curriculum, through the Foundation for Environmental Education, was made possible by the generous support of Hanover Re, whose donation opened doors for numerous children to embark on these educational journeys.
