"I do what I do best, I take scores. You do what you do best, try to stop guys like me."
This film is so close to perfect it hurts! I knew I was going to enjoy this but I didn't expect so much mastery on display.
The score is masterful. The cinematography is fantastic. The action sequences are brilliant. The acting, apart from one person who I will touch on, is perfect. The characters are mostly well-built. I fucking loved this.
The one main negative I had is Vincent's cunty fucking wife. Pardon my french, but there is not a better word to describe her than cunty. She was a total cunt. Seriously. She was mad because Vincent couldn't be home by 830 despite the fact that he's literally a top detective. They can't work to a fucking schedule. Plus he was a better father to her kid than her. She was just as fucking hopeless as the father we don't ever see. I'm not sure if it was intentional but she was written so unnecessarily negative and, well, cunty, that I found myself tuning out whenever she was on the screen. It was that bad. I'd rather they cut her out completely, give Pacino the solo stepfather role, and use the extra time to flesh out Trejo or Waingro a bit more. Trejo could've been a cool character but he wasn't fleshed out enough for it to make an impact when what happened to him happened. And it would've been nice to get some kind of explanation as to why Waingro was the way he was.
Overall though, those three things didn't take away from the fact that this is a masterpiece and damn-near perfect (although the cunty wife was really shit. Fuck her.)
Also, apologies for saying cunt so much in this review!
