Well, it took a while but I have officially made it halfway through my 100 degrees challenge. I'll get to Planet Terror in a minute but I just thought I'd give a quick rundown of my thoughts on the challenge so far.
It's a great way to shrink one's watchlist. I've seen some true classics and some of my all-time favourites; The Godfather Parts I and II, The Thing, Watchmen, Heat etc. It's also pretty lucky I guess in that I haven't seen a film I despised yet, although there has been some disappointments. The Road and A History of Violence both come to mind. In saying that, I have probably avoided some of the duds as I have changed my list three times now, usually when I get to a film I just can't get into the mood to watch. Knowing me, I'll probably change it three more times as well, although I have a few classics in line with the likes of Chinatown, Leon and The Fly in my list. Anyway, this is a fun challenge and I thank anyone that has taken the time to read my reviews, follow along or even join in the challenge yourself. Now, onto the review itself.
Planet Terror was a lot of fun, but I think the reason I didn't get as much enjoyment out of it as others may have is because I am not familiar with the films that this is a homage to; schlock horrors.
However, this is a fun B-Grade action/horror with some good performances (not Rose McGowan, she was awful), that also had some fantastic practical effects for the gore and a wonderful score. If anyone has any schlocky horror recommendations, I plan on doing a "decades challenge" in the nearish future and could use some ideas.
Apart from the performance of Rose McGowan, I think the worst thing about this, and it isn't even anyone's fault (except for Harvey Weinstein), is the fact that there is a character called The Rapist in a film that was "proudly brought to you by your friends at the Weinstein Company." That made me cringe.
