Although it is just plain fun to rank a director's movies, it may also help me think about the director's oeuvre of work as a whole. On the other hand, some of his characters can be quite talkative. He usually doesn't focus on one protagonist, but focuses on the tapestry of human life through many different characters. His characters are usually loners, outsiders, foreigners, or travelers to further depict an America that is not homogenous or popular and sets them not in the big, well-known cities ofAmerica, but in smaller cities that comprise the America not often shown in movies.

He furthers this commitment to the non-mainstream by filling his movie with an eclectic collection of songs he clearly loves, as he also often casts musicians in his movies.
