There is often a focus on the external worlds her characters inhabit. The environments her characters exist in impact their very souls and often can act as a catalyst for fundamental character change, longing or ability to achieve fulfillment.
Coppola also deglamorizes a lot of her characters and their lifestyles. A lot of the characters are idols and rich, but she represents them quite plainly and as people who have a lot on unfulfillment and unhappiness in their lives. She captures the mundanity of their lives and forgoes all stylish camera movements and editing to question any excitement or pleasure we might derive from seeing these lavish characters or their lifestyles.
