Fantasy Film Nights 2016.
An A24 folk horror tale, a directors debut.
The rest is history.
When I think of folk horror in the woods,
The VVitch became something like a reference in the look for me.
Also for the mythology of a witch?
Hmm… hard to say.
Robert Eggers started strong.
He came with pictures that put you back in time. About 1630.
Some years went by since I’ve seen it last.
Folk horror became one of my most atmospheric genres and I’ve seen quite a bunch of films since then.
Maybe a reason that strong vibe I had once with this film is a little weaker now.
It digs into the witch mythology but gives you just the little finger.
I wished to get at least a hand or more.
At the point the movie gets most interesting,
it ends.
Moments that are more related to it, happen in darkness.
Short and so dark, I can’t recognize details.
It’s a pity, I would love to explore this much more.
I also realized now, there is pretty much hysterical screaming. A bit too often.
This are some of the thoughts that keep it from 5.
But what a debut, what a precise, deeply researched production.
The look is just fantastic! The costumes, the way they live, the sound design, the sparse music. Cinematography is masterful.
I think the darkness and lighting is a decision, sometimes I wished the lightning would be a little more playful.
The cast was unknown at that time what I think is perfect for that kind of films.
Now I’m really surprised how young Anya Taylor-Joy is!
I love how raw everything is.
When the little siblings suddenly fall to the ground, I always think how nasty this is.
Always consequential in happenings.
The star of the film is still Black Phillip.
One of the best animal antagonists of movie history! Built a throne for evil Black Phillip!
The goat witchmaster!
The VVitch is still a great horror fable.
An overcoming of darkness, deeply hidden in the woods.
Robert Eggers made his perfect masterpiece already with his second film. The fantastic lonely Arthouse chamber play The Lighthouse
I think the look of The VVitch influenced films like The Devils Bath
I would also recommend 2 folk horror fables with a similar look from 2022, almost nobody recognized.
The Goat and Her Three Kids (Romania)
You Won’t Be Alone (Macedonia)
I loved especially the last one very much!
