"I knew something would happen sooner or later. A fire or something serious. If not, I don't get why people fall like that... they fall down through the stairwell, bleeding all over. I can't go up to my home. So, here we are. I am going to sue. I am definitely going to sue."
[REC] is my favorite found footage film, and most of the runners up are not very close.
The reason is simple: itβs frightening. Sure, it does a lot of other things very right, but, bottom line, this is much more than your usual documentary-format slow horror film. [REC] is 75 minutes of frenetic single camera footage in a series of long continuous takes full of incredible energy, shot in a closed apartment building in Barcelona as a routine fire department call devolves into something more serious.
The footage is shot by a news crew of two people who were dispatched to document a quiet night at a firehouse. Out on a call, it quickly becomes clear that the situation is going to be much worse than advertised. As the body count rises and chaos mounts on chaos, [REC] just spirals into an extremely entertaining nightmare. Thereβs no fuss, no editing, no incidental music, no explanation post-hoc from a documentary crew. Just two people, one camera, one horrible evening.
The protagonistβwhat can I say. Sheβs perfect. Watching Manuela Velascoβs Angela switch from bored reporter trying to find a way to hype up a trivial house call to truth-telling self-defending survival horror lead is so satisfying.
The runtime is miniature: there may be two slow minutes, but otherwise, every moment is used to best effect. And while I usually find found footage somewhat anemic and tame, [REC] is full of intense bloody horror violence. This is all I ask for, so why is it so rare?
You will find two extremely high impact jump scares hereβmaybe three, depending on how sensitive you areβalong with some gruesome body horror moments. The plot itself makes a lot of sense as far as these films go. Itβs simple, and by the end youβll have a reasonably good explanation in your mind for what went wrong.
This is around my third rewatch. I pull this out whenever I meet someone who wants to be really frightened by horror and who I know is unfamiliar with the genre. It has sent plenty of people leaping off couches screaming, so itβs a well-tested choice. Iβve thrown it into the Gateway Horror list for this reason.
[REC]βs sequels have mixed reputations. Iβm going to go through the whole series in the near future and will report back about how they are. I remember [REC]2 is good, and I donβt remember anything that happens, so hopefully thereβs a bit more fun to be had.
Note: Skip reading the lists at the end if you donβt want to know what type of horror there is.
Do you have other films you find this energetic and thrilling? If so, please tell me in the comments; I will watch as much of this as exists. And if you havenβt seen [REC] yet, go watch it now please! I hope it will become a favorite of yours too.
Strong recommendation for all viewers.
