Biofungicide Technology

Microbial-based biofungicide technologies for controlling plant diseases.

Bionema develops advanced technologies that utilize naturally occurring microorganisms, such as fungi and bacteria, to combat plant diseases in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, and turf management.

Our goal is to create sustainable biocontrol solutions that reduce the reliance on synthetic pesticides while being cost-effective and scalable globally.

Our formulations are designed for soil, seed, and foliar applications. They are easy to distribute and can be applied using conventional equipment. Additionally, they exhibit high efficacy against various plant diseases. These technologies target specific diseases, promote biodiversity, increase yields, and enhance long-term ecological balance and sustainability.

Fungal biocontrol agents represent a groundbreaking approach that employs safe, naturally selected fungal strains to control plant diseases. By enhancing adhesion to plant leaves and ensuring controlled release, we deliver precise and environmentally friendly plant disease management solutions that align with sustainable and organic farming practices.

Fungal biocontrol effectively utilises fungi and bacteria to manage plant diseases.

Bionema is a leader in developing environmentally responsible technologies for managing plant diseases, aimed at enhancing food security, restoring ecological balance, and transforming agricultural practices.

Our technology is specifically designed to target harmful crop diseases while preserving beneficial insects and the broader ecosystem. By infecting disease-causing organisms and leading to their eventual death, this natural, non-toxic process offers a highly effective and sustainable alternative to synthetic chemical fungicides, ensuring effective disease control without harmful residues.

Bionema’s technologies are adaptable to both conventional and organic farming systems. They align with integrated pest management (IPM) practices, providing long-term protection and reducing reliance on synthetic fungicides.

Our ongoing research continues to improve the effectiveness and versatility of these technologies, making them suitable for various climates and environments worldwide.

Fungal and bacterial-based technology for plant disease control:

How Technology Works

Myco-pathogenic fungi and bacteria have developed intricate strategies to infect and manipulate their hosts, exploiting them for nutrients and facilitating their spread. Fungi, for example, use various mechanisms to overcome plant or animal defences. The infection process often begins with the fungi adhering to the host surface, followed by penetration through specialised structures known as appressoria, which create turgor pressure to break through the host’s outer barriers physically.

Once inside, fungi release various enzymes that degrade host cell walls and tissues, promoting nutrient absorption. Additionally, myco-pathogenic fungi may secrete effector proteins that manipulate the host’s cellular processes and suppress immune responses. This allows the fungus to colonise and propagate without interference.

Pathogenic bacteria use various strategies to infect and control their hosts. They typically start by attaching to host surfaces through structures such as pili. Once successful attachment, bacteria can invade host tissues and establish themselves by producing harmful toxins. Some bacteria release virulence factors, including enzymes and proteins, that damage or dismantle host cell structures, allowing the bacteria to multiply. Moreover, many pathogenic bacteria evade the host’s immune system by altering their surface proteins, secreting protective capsules, or injecting proteins into host cells that disrupt immune signalling pathways. These tactics enable the bacteria to survive within the host environment, causing disease and facilitating their spread to new hosts.
