What is Metal Testing?

Metal Testing is the process of analysing the properties of metals and alloys to evaluate their composition, strength and overall quality.

This testing method is essential for understanding how metals may perform under stress, highlight any resistance to corrosion and identify weaknesses within the metals microstructure.

This can help validate the metal being utilised within your asset (or product) is safe, durable and reliable within real-life conditions.

Metal Analysis is essential across many industries, helping to:

  • Verify metal specifications before production
  • Identify metal grade and alloy type
  • Ensure compliance with industry and regulatory standards
  • Assess metal performance in extreme environments and demanding applications.

Our accredited metal testing laboratory and team of specialists offer a wide range of testing methods for various metal types. Whether you require Destructive Testing of Metals, Metal Failure Analysis,Chemical Analysis of Metals, or support with quality compliance, we are your trusted partner for reliable metal tests.

What sample sizes do you require for Metal Testing?

Our sample size requirements can vary depending on the test you need. If you’re unsure about the correct sample size to send in, here are some general guidelines.

  • Tensile Testing: Minimum size of 13 mm square / diameter × 53 mm length.
  • Mechanical Testing of flat/sheet materials: Ideally 10 mm width × 70 mm length.
  • ICP-OES: Requires a minimum of 5 grams of material.
  • Spark-OES: A minimum of 6 mm diameter and 2 mm thickness is required.
  • Salt Spray Testing: For small general items, a 10 cm × 15 cm panel is ideal. For larger components, please send us a drawing so we can assess cabinet compatibility for loading and unloading.
  • Metallography: There’s no strict size limit. We’ll confirm dimensions with you during the initial consultation.

While these are standard requirements, we can accommodate smaller samples in certain cases. If you’re unsure or have specific needs, please contact us and we’ll be happy to assist you with your sample preparation.
