ABOUT US
An energy transformation project.
About us ·
- HistoryBasque Hydrogen was set up with the mission of promoting the use of renewable hydrogen as a key element in the energy transition. The objective is to supply 100% renewable hydrogen to the synthetic fuels (e-fuels) demo plant currently under construction in the Port of Bilbao, which, when commissioned, will produce 100% renewable fuels with zero net CO2 emissions to replace traditional fuels, thereby demonstrating the viability of the process and paving the way towards industrial-scale production. The plant will also be able to supply surplus renewable hydrogen to Petronor and the hydrogen refuelling station in the Abanto-Zierbena Technology Park, contributing to the decarbonisation of industry and transport.
- OwnershipThe shareholders of Basque Hydrogen are Alba, a company created from Petronor, Enagas Renovable and CADEM (EVE Group).
- VisionTo be leaders in the energy transition, helping to position the Basque Country as a benchmark in renewable hydrogen technologies to build a sustainable future.
- MissionTo drive the development of renewable hydrogen as a key vector for decarbonising industry, transport and energy, promoting innovation and sustainability in the Basque Country.
- InnovationBasque Hydrogen identifies with innovation and energy transformation.

RENEWABLE HYDROGEN
What is renewable hydrogen?
Renewable hydrogen ·
Renewable (also known as green) hydrogen is hydrogen produced by processes that use renewable energy sources, such as water electrolysis, with electricity from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, and with zero CO2 emissions, unlike grey hydrogen, which is obtained from fossil fuels.
Advantages ofrenewable hydrogen
Production technology that does not produce greenhouse gases.
Can be used to match up supply and demand.
Can be used in a variety of sectors, such as industry, transport and power production.
Contributes to reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Key to theenergy transition
Renewable hydrogen is essential in the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy system for several reasons:
It enables fossil fuels to be replaced in hard-to-abate sectors such as heavy industry and transport.
It maximises the use of renewable energy sources.
It promotes a model in which hydrogen can be part of a wider renewable energy cycle.
The development of hydrogen as an energy vector will reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and, with its further development and corresponding optimisation, the sectors in which it is used can become more competitive.
In short, renewable hydrogen is not only a clean and versatile energy solution, but also has the potential to play a key role in the transition to a sustainable future, helping to mitigate climate change and promoting a low-carbon economy.
The plant ·
The plant

- The Basque Hydrogen plant will be located in the Port of Bilbao, at Punta Sollana.
- The plant will be connected to the synthetic fuels plant, located on the same site at the Port.
- It will be equipped with a 10 MW electrolyser, capable of producing around 1,600 t/year of renewable hydrogen.
- There will be a pipeline connection between the plant and the Petronor refinery. The refinery will be able to supply renewable hydrogen to the Abanto-Zierbana hydrogen refuelling station.
