Kidnapping my evening

Posted in Netflix, tv with tags on February 5, 2026 by jefferyrn

I know I am supposed to care about a woman in Tucson that was kidnapped. But the coverage is ridiculous.  They have nothing to say that is new. Pure speculation.

It has been a small break from the ICE murders.  The Epstein files do not get much attention except on the Internet.

And Trump keeps saying crazy things about the 2020 election being corrupt and stolen.  Good grief…,

I need a break.  I’m watching the Game Show Network out of desperation.  For some reason I think you can’t watch Netflix before 8 pm.

We watched the four new episodes of Bridgerton.  The lead this season is so handsome.  But it is far fetched that he does not recognize the maid from the maskarade ball.  They only wore silly little masks over their eyes.  And he has kissed her.

At the ball.

The next four episodes are out at the end of the month. I shall have to search for something else to watch this evening.

All the news…not so fit to print

Posted in american idol, election, The Voice, tv on April 4, 2018 by jefferyrn

I am trying to avoid the news. It has caused me great despair. The political wars make me ill. So I try to watch things like ”American Idol” or the “Voice”. The sitcoms are full of politics these days too. I want to watch the reboots of “Will and Grace” and “Rosanne” but they are both volatile with political opinions. Whether I agree with the point of view or not, it is upsetting to me.

I don’t want to know that “Rosanne”(Rosanne Barr) or “Anastasia Beaverhausen” (Megan Mullally) are Trump supporters. Or that “Jackie” (Laurie Metcalf) didn’t vote for either candidate but I do because I watched these shows.

Don’t get me wrong. I like these actors. I respect their need to tell the world things are not right in Washington. The problem is I already know this and it is killing me.

I worry about Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon on CNN. I want to punch Jason Miller. I have nightmares that our country is in grave danger from Korea or Russia or trade wars or whatever the heck they are talking about that is “Breaking News”.

So I don’t need entertainers telling me all this stuff again. I need them to provide me with an escape to “La La Land” where everything is going to be alright.

I am left with the “Voice” which allows me to root for my favorite contestants and laugh at the antics of Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Alicia Keys and former Idol winner Kelly Clarkson. It is truly mindless entertainment with an occasional wrong note.

I have started watching “American Idol” in spite of Ryan Seacrest. I like Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. Katy Perry is a little obnoxious and full of herself but she is a nice contrast to the others on the judge’s panel. Again it is mindless entertainment and occasionally I like one of the contestants.

Maybe the sitcoms will stop trying to change the world and get back to just being entertaining. Wouldn’t that be a relief for us all?

Sick again!

Posted in health, tv, weight loss on January 7, 2013 by jefferyrn

Good news!  I have lost weight.  It seems you can’t eat as much when you are trying to cough up a lung!  (The cat does it all the time I know, but he is not human or is he?)  I have bronchitis.  I went to urgent care on Friday after not sleeping the entire night.  She put me on an antibiotic pack, some cough medicine that has narcotics in it, and a puffer to use here at work.   If you had ask me Friday if I would be here at work today I would have said no way.  But the stuff is working.  I am getting better.  And I could not stand the couch one more day!

furball

I was going to post a picture of a fur ball but this poor fellow lying in bed in pain with one is a much wiser choice don’t you think?

I learned somethings this weekend.  First, my partner is there for me and takes good care of me when I am sick.  Second,  mommy dearest is just as unresponsive in her 70s as she was when I was little. “We’re playing bridge dear, can I call you tomorrow?”  And last but not least, no matter how much money you give her, Hilary will not get the remodel done on time or in budget and it probably won’t even be anything you originally wanted.  I think I have seen every episode of  “Love it or List it”.

Oh and one more thing.  If you are depending on David Visentin to find you a new place be prepared to look at a lot of crap before he some how finds your dream home in the end, over budget of course!

With these two as my friend all weekend, is is any wonder I am back at work today?  I do think that a lot of the arguing is staged, but it does make for good theater, oh wait this is supposed to be a reality show isn’t it?   I am hooked on these home improvement channels.   The one where they go find a vacation house for half a million is a little unrealistic too.   And I started watching one about real estate in Alaska.   Too darn cold for me!  I don’t care how many acres of land the log cabin has around it.

Licking lizards and mediums

There is a show on TruTV that recently caught my attention. “Lizard Lick Towing”,  is this show for real?  The episode I watched these guys flew to New Orleans and repossessed an air boat.   Shades of Deliverance.  I had a hard time believing it wasn’t all made up for the cameras.   Then I switched over to the  TLC and started watching “Long Island Medium”.  This woman is supposed to be for real, unlike “The Ghost Whisper” which I love to watch.

Melinda (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is crying while talking to her husband, Jim (David Conrad), who really isn't her husband. It's her husbands spirit in another man's body (Sam Lucas).

I want to believe that this woman can talk to the dead, but she is making a living with her parlor tricks, drives a Mercedes no less,  so there is a lot of room for doubt.  To be fair she has a track record and has been on several talk shows, but really!  I watched several episodes because they were running them all day Sunday.  It was called “Catch up”.   I didn’t see anything she said that was all that earth shattering or life changing as the series tries to prompt.

Reality,  who doesn’t have a dead loved one?   Who doesn’t feel guilt over the loss of a child?  Who doesn’t wish they could have spent more time with their loved one before they died?   She is “reading” as she calls it.  She is reading the emotions in the room.  I don’t believe she is talking to dead people.  But it is fun to watch and I would like to believe what she is saying.

At least when I watch “The Ghost Whisperer”, which was originally based on a real person, I know I am watching fantasy.  Hollywood has put a spin on it to make it more interesting.

I don’t know how much of that Long Island accent I can take on this show.  I may have to switch over to “Lizard Lick Towing” again.

Vampire Diaries

Posted in random, tv on March 12, 2012 by jefferyrn

It took me awhile but I have figured out how to watch Netflix on my Smart TV and now I am hooked on a series called “The Vampire Diaries”.   This show is in its third season on iTV2 which I don’t get.  But on Netflix  you can watch the whole series starting with episode 1 season 1.    I have only watch the first two shows so far.

It stars Paul Westly (29) as an 162-year-old vampire Stefan Salvatore.  23-year-old Nina Dobrev stars as Elena Gilbert, a teenager who falls in love with him.

After you get past the fact that none of the cast could possibly be in high school, it is compelling to watch.  Considering Paul was born the year I graduated college, the whole thing is a fantasy for sure.  I hope to look that good at 162.

Ian Somerhalder plays Damon Salvatore, Stephan’s evil and might I add equally hot brother.  There are some gruesome bloody shots of bodies hanging from trees and attacks in graveyards, but mostly it is a love story with some rather odd participants to say the least.   I need to watch more of these to give you a better review.  There are lots of episode for me to catch up on.

Raising Hope

This has become a must watch show for me.  Loosely based on the movie “Raising Arizona”, it is quirky and fun.   I am glad to see Cloris Leachman back in a series.  When she dived under the mattress after a piece of taffy I almost pissed my pants.  The rest of the cast is great too.  Not since “Married with Children” have I seen a group of odd balls that I could still relate too like these people.

It’s a wonderful Christmas!

Posted in random, tv on December 13, 2010 by jefferyrn

I’ve been searching for Christmas movies that have made me smile over the years.   There are many that I enjoy watching year after year.   Did you know that “It’s a Wonderful Life” is considered the most inspirational film of all time?  I have fond memories of watching this in my grandmother’s apartment every year when I was a child.   As a child of the ’70 (17 when this was made) I also remember the Marlo Thomas (That Girl) version called “It Happened One Christmas”.   Marlo was being interviewed with her husband Phil Donahue on some talk show the other day and it reminded me of this TV classic.

Of course, the original with Donna Reed and James Stewart will always be the definitive versioin, but Marlo does a nice job with this retelling.

What movies are on your must see list for Christmas?

Here is my top 10.

1.  It’s a  Wonderful Life.

2.  White Christmas.

3.  Holiday Inn.

4.  A Christmas Carol (1951).

5.  How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the cartoon).

6.  A Christmas Story.  (You’re gonna shoot your eye out with that thing!)

7.  Charlie Brown’s Christmas. (Mom let us stay up past 7 to watch this!)

8.  Home Alone. (Macaulay Culkin was so cute!)

9.  Meet Me in St. Louis.  (While technically not a Christmas movie, Judy does sing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”.   It is kind of a sad song.   The Ella Fitzgerald version is much more light and happy.)

10.  National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. (Chevy Chase at his best.)

So you think you can dance again?

Posted in sytycd, tv on July 2, 2010 by jefferyrn

Mia Michaels and Mary Murphy

I have not been commenting on this show, but as an addict I am watching.   The format has changed.  Instead of dancing with each other, they are dancing with previous season “all-stars”.   At first I didn’ t like this approach, but it makes for better performances and you only need to watch one of the dancers.  If I find myself watching the “all-star” more than the contestant I know they don’t measure up.

Another change that bothers me is the judges themselves.   Mary Murphy was replaced by Mia Michaels.   I love Mia as a choreographer, but as a judge I find her a bit mean-spirited sometimes.   Nigel says that in real life the judges are harder.  So I guess if this is to be a true reality show she is on the mark, but I still feel for the contestants.  I think she has heart too, but she is brutally honest.

Mary Murphy was fun and I miss the Hot Tamale Train.  She may guest judge, although there have not been any to date.  I am sure Nigel’s ears could use the rest from her screams of excitement.

The picture below is of  Kent Boyd.   He is not the best dancer on the show but he makes me smile and I love watching him.  He is only 18.

Reality Sucks

Now that AI and DWTS have ended for the season the replacements are here.   Fox brings in “So You Think You Can Dance” and the other network is offering “America’s Got Talent” (san David Hasselhoff).  I hate the beginning of both of these shows.  They go to cities far and wide and audition new talent.  Some of this talent should never be seen anywhere and yet we are supposed to believe that they tried out for the talent scout who then decided they are good enough to put before the panels of judges.  I still believe in Leprechaun’s too after a few whiskeys.

They’re magically delicious!

AI ended with a goodbye to Simon

Simon Cowell

AI was on for 2 hours!  It always makes me crazy that they can stretch out a results show for so long.  It all comes down to the final 5 minutes when we actually see who the winner is, but first we go through this long, long , show.  It seems everybody wants to be on American Idol.   We had Chicago singing with Lee, we had Janet Jackson singing with the top 10, we had Alantis Morissette singing with Crystal, we had Joe Cocker singing with the top two, and apparently some other guest that I didn’t bother to watch….boring!

Of course, being of the same generation as Janet I enjoyed see her again.  She looked great.  My partner said she looked like she was channeling Diana Ross or something with that big gown she came out in, but the hair was gone and there were no wind machines so I disagree.  What also annoys me about these guest performances are that most of them lip sync and Janet was no exception.  She hid here lips with a big clunky mic and when she really talked or sang a verse it came from a head set she was wearing.  Seem odd.  But once she ripped of that dress and the boy dancers ripped off their shirt everyone got excited as she sang “Nasty” from her Control album.  The rap part appeared to be live but the rest was lip sync for sure.

I am glad I saw Chicago.  They are coming to Lake Tahoe and I turned down a chance to go with some friends.  After seeing them try to sing last night I am glad I did!

The biggest disappointment of the night is that Crystal didn’t win.  I think I knew in my heart that she wasn’t going to, but it still sucks.   There are a lot of bloggers who think the whole show is rigged.  The last two season add a lot of fuel to that fire.  I think they couldn’t bare to have an openly gay winner like Adam last year, and they weren’t going for a “Lilith Fair” Melissa Etheridge loving gal this year.  It’s not mainstream enough for the title “American” Idol.

And then there was the forgettable montage to Simon.  This is his last season on Idol.  I think it maybe the end for the show all together.  It was nice to see Paula Abdul again.  She looked fantastic!  I couldn’t find a picture to post from last night, but she never looked happier in a bright pink short dress.  Of course the homage showed clips of her and Simon and that disturbing “french” kiss they had on air.  But she seems to be okay last night.
