How to apply for a passport at U.S. Consulate Vienna

Please Note – U.S. citizens MUST travel to the U.S. on their U.S. passport: According to Section 215 of the U.S Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1185), it is illegal for a U.S. citizen to enter or leave the U.S. on anything other than a U.S. travel document. This applies to dual citizens as well, meaning that persons holding a U.S. and a foreign passport MUST enter and leave the U.S. on a valid U.S. passport; they may NOT enter/leave the U.S. on an Austrian/foreign passport. This applies to children as well as adults.

On return to the European Union, the dual national needs to enter the European Union with their EU passport. It is illegal to enter the EU as an EU citizen on a U.S. passport.

Your child never had a U.S. passport? You might want to consider applying for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad first, before you apply for a passport.

Renewing / applying in-person: To submit a passport application at U.S. Consulate Vienna, see Apply in Person for detailed instructions and schedule your appointment online. For most cases, the average turnaround time is 4-5 weeks.  Cases submitted without the correct paperwork and/or supporting documents may take longer.

Passport renewal by mail: Save a trip to the consular section! Adults currently holding a 10-year passport may be eligible to renew by mail and pay the application fee online. See Renew by Mail for eligibility requirements. You must follow the detailed instructions EXACTLY.  The average turnaround time is 4-5 weeks.

Emergency passports: If your previous passport was lost, stolen or expired, and you have immediate travel plans, we may be able to issue a temporary, emergency passport.  This service can take from one to several days, depending on the complexity of the case and the availability of supporting documents. See Emergency Passport instructions.

Replacing a limited-validity passport, updating or correcting your current passport: Do you need to update your currently valid passport or correct an error? Need to exchange a limited-validity passport for a full-validity passport? You may be eligible to use the form DS-5504.
