It's interesting how, over time, whether you intend it or not, your site will kind of grow to reflect who you are. There's been quite a number of times I've had a conversation with someone online and realized I've already written about the exact topic we're talking about. By reading all of the posts on here you won't know me as a person, but... You'll get an idea of who I am. Honestly, I wish more people had websites for that reason.

When someone starts openly doubting The Holocaust or saying things that most people would find racist or sexist, my first thought is usually to wonder if or why they thought that it was a good idea to say those things out loud. Some of them seem to think it's an assault on their Free Speech for anyone deciding not to listen to them.

This page is ranked according to the following algorithm: Score = log10(U) + (S / (B * 86,400)); Where, U = Upvotes of a post; S = Seconds since Jan 1st, 2020; B = Buoyancy modifier (currently at 14); B values is used to modify the effect of time on the score. A lower B causes posts to sink faster with time.

As the number of pages grew, I naturally wanted some consistency. I wanted a common layout for my pages, navigation links, a footer that did not need to be edited in twenty places. An early version of this website used HTML frames to accomplish these goals. Later, I rewrote the website in PHP. Now this website is generated using Common Lisp.

Inputting data. Watching videos. Playing games. In general, just doing shit with no stuttering or delays. Desktops kick ass in every category.

What if the web, and most websites besides the few obvious exceptions, were instead more like book publishing? A few thousand dedicated readers out there, at best.

I’m working on what all this means for me. — I am going to keep painting, writing, and connecting.

There is no secret to the longevity of this blog or the wider website other than my own bloody-mindedness and the fact that there’s no grift involved.

I am not less than the other people in the IndieWeb community for not having a fancy, automated, cool setup on my personal website. Nobody has ever made me feel that way. It doesn’t matter if all you have is a simple page with your name and email.

We believe independent media cannot be beholden to proprietary tech companies, so Ghost publishers don't just "own their email list" — they own the entire software stack that underpins their business, end to end.

But is this enough to call Gisnep a success? I mean, if it didn’t require any upkeep and was completely set-and-forget, I’d be happy with even one visitor per day. But for the (admittedly small) amount of work it requires to maintain, I wish more people were playing it.

A way to document our perception of reality

I found myself introduced to a new world: one where form is looser than any other community I have seen. Posts can be photographs of quotes, where the typography of the photograph and the background adds dimension to the words. Or can be blog post-esque musings about the world. Or stories. Or re-posts of someone else’s work. All in one place, side-by-side.

I want people on the web to have this freedom. I want this freedom for myself and for ordinary internet users everywhere.

There are always tradeoffs with the web, but hopefully we are moving towards more individual control of the things we create.

Regardless of whether or not it's part of this site's visible structure, I do think the 'seasons' approach to running a website / blog is an interesting twist on the traditional way to order a blog — reverse-chronological. Perhaps the seasons concept has more in common with the digital garden pattern for websites in 2025?

The notes! They can still communicate! Blogs. They’re great!

This started as a small 88 x 31 badge for my site. Then I went to make an alternate at a different size. But, then I ran across a set of travel stickers for suitcases in a magazine that can be used as intended.

My personal mission is to empower people to make interesting, useful, and inclusive things on the web…and I always love making side projects!

We internalize concepts slowly. Mastery and satisfaction don’t come from the frantic consumption of a hundred different things, but from immersing yourself in one thing, from wrestling with it, from letting it change you. It’s the long email thread with a friend debating a single concept. It’s the quiet hour spent thinking, not just consuming. That is where the real work happens.

And when the primary focus of the business is on the ads, everything else is sort of ancillary — it’s only important insofar as it keeps people around, to look at the ads. It’s jingling keys. It’s… Whatever.

Give me the small web in every way.

It happens when we start treating AI as an infallible oracle rather than the powerful, deeply flawed, and sometimes an outright weird tool. The threats aren’t science fiction anymore; they’re the real-world risks of algorithmic biases getting baked into government policies, a complete lack of accountability when things go wrong, and the potential for some truly catastrophic, unexplainable errors.

The idea is that drawing can help you write, and writing can help you draw, and you figure out things that you missed the first time around.

A real copilot, on a commercial airline? They know the plane. The systems. They’ve done the simulations. They go through recertification. When they speak, it’s to enhance the pilot... Not to shotgun random advice into the cockpit and eject themselves mid-flight.

When we make websites difficult for bots and scrapers to use, we have the unintentional side-effect of making website difficult for assistive technologies to use.

We must all learn a deeper form of strength for these times, I think.

We need to move beyond a Mastodon vs. Bluesky mindset. As I’ve blogged several times, they are solving slightly different problems. We can draw inspiration from each one to make the web more open. I want both to exist.

But the process of uncovering truth is often a messy and long one.

We will always need voices making sense of the events in our time.
