About this collection
My father took me to see Star Wars on Day 1 at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood. He knew it would be a big deal. I loved the movie and the droids fascinated me. A few years later, we lived in the Philippines. I was exposed to 1970s-era robots like Voltes V and Mazinger Z on our tiny 12 inch black and white tv. And the mall in Greenhills, Metro Manila had an incredible display of chogokin: die cast robot toys of exquisite quality.
I would seek out robot toys later but spent money on them only occasionally. But after my mother died in 2010, I started to lean into experiences that were about whimsy. And part of that, was acquiring toy robots that inspired me.
Middle-aged men, when engaged in a hobby, can overspend. So I established a set of rules for myself.
The rules
- No robot toys over 12 inches high
- Robots can't cost more than $100
- Avoid duplication
- Avoid too many bots of the same franchise One could fill a house with only Transformers, for example
- Any robot is fair game
- "Jaeger" (piloted robots) are ok but mecha or powered suits are not really interesting to me
- Cyborgs are not robots. Sorry, RoboCop, Seven of Nine, & Inspector Gadget.
- Avoid 3-D printing robots
