There are 149 issues total in the Animerica series, published by Viz Communications. It began with a preview/premiere issue in 1992 (Volume 1, No. 0) and ended in 2005 (Volume 13, No. 6). The complete series includes:

  • 1 preview issue (1992).
  • 10 issues in Volume 1 (1993).
  • 12 issues in each of Volumes 2-12 (1994 through 2004).
  • 6 issues in Volume 13 (2005).

Note: Two magazines in Volume 9 are numbered as double issues – No. 8/9 and No. 10/11 – so the total number of magazines is actually 147, though the number of issues is 149.

The cover price per issue was $4.95 US/$6.50 Canadian.

This stapled magazine featured a full-color cover, and the first few inside sheets were also in color. The rest of the inside pages were black ink printing on the sort of semi-gloss paper typically used in magazines. (The paper used for the later related magazine, Animerica Extra, used that similar to newspapers or vintage comic books.) The length was 64 pages, and the dimensions were 8.5″ wide by 11″ tall.

At the beginning of the series, each issue typically included:

  • Feature article interview with a major anime/manga creator. (The first five years’ worth of these were eventually rounded up and published in book form as Animerica Interviews.)
  • Other feature articles on various aspects of anime/manga production, or topics about specific series.
  • Installments in a serial presentation of a major manga, usually covering several issues. Each issue included only a couple such featured manga series.
  • A “News” department with sections on Japan, America, and Manga Close-Up.
  • A “Reviews” department with sections on Best of the West, Best of the East, and CD Reviews.
  • A “Departments” section with a letter from the editor, highlights from Japanese anime magazines, essays, top 10 lists, release schedules – plus bits of material from magazines, movies, video games, etc.

For more details on these features and departments in the magazine, or to see how the composition changed over time, see the tables of contents for block of issues on the subpages under this page.
