Lakatamia was declared as a Municipality in 1986. As of July 1, 2024, following the Cyprus Local Government Reform, the new Municipality of Lakatamia also includes Tseri and Anthoupoli municipal quarters. The Municipality’s population amounts to 53.273 (2021 census) and the municipality covers an area of 55 km².

The Municipality of Latsia – Geri is situated on the southeast of the city and it is a developing urban area of 50 km². As of July 1, 2024, following the Cyprus Local Government Reform, the Municipality includes the municipal quarters of the former Municipalities of Latsia and Geri. According to the most recent census (2021), the number of Latsia – Geri Municipality’s citizens is 28.230.

Nicosia Municipality is the metropolitan municipality of the city. As of July 1, 2024, following the Cyprus Local Government Reform, Nicosia Municipality also includes, as municipal quarters, the former Municipalities of Aglantzia, Engomi and Ayios Dometios. The Municipality covers an area of 103 km² and its population reaches 111.797 inhabitants (2021 census).

The South Nicosia – Idalion Municipality was established on July 1, 2024, following the Cyprus Local Government Reform. The Municipality includes the municipal quarters of Alambra, Lympia, Nisou, Pera Chorio and Potamia. The Municipality’s population amounts to 22.632 (2021 census) and covers an area of 108km².

The Municipality of Strovolos was established in 1986 and, according to the 2021 census, it has 71.123 inhabitants. Strovolos is nowadays a large urban area, of 25 km², which is divided into six parishes: Chryseleousa, Ag. Dimitrios, Ap. Varnavas, Ag. Makarios, Ag. Vasilios, Martyr of the Nation Kyprianos and Stavros.
