Lancashire’s First Accessible Wheelyboat
Established on April 25th, 2022, the Anderton Centre’s Wheelyboat offers an inclusive, thrilling way for people of all abilities to enjoy sailing and water-based activities on the picturesque Lower Rivington Reservoir. This pioneering addition, part of the Lancashire Outdoor Activities Initiative, symbolises a significant step forward in making outdoor adventures accessible to everyone.

A Star-Studded Launch with Peter Kay
The launch event was made even more special by the presence of comedian and actor Peter Kay, who served as the guest of honour to officially christen the boat. Cutting the ribbon on this state-of-the-art craft, Peter expressed his admiration for the Anderton Centre and the transformative impact of the Wheelyboat.
“It’s very lovely to be here today. I’m honoured to be asked to launch this fantastic Wheelyboat, which I hope gives a lot of people a lot of pleasure and happiness out on the water,” said Peter. “The Anderton Centre is a fantastic place and I love coming here—the people are really nice. I have been here with my children and they love it. It’s a hidden gem in Bolton, a lovely place.”
Peter was also presented with an ‘honorary instructor’ T-shirt by David Germain, Chief Executive Officer of the Anderton Centre.

Empowering Experiences on the Water
The fully accessible Coulam Wheelyboat V17 powerboat removes barriers to water-based activities, enabling disabled adults and children to participate alongside their able-bodied peers.
“This Wheelyboat will improve health, wellbeing, life chances, and broaden horizons for all of its users. It will provide thrills, adventure, excitement, and help forge lifelong friendships and relationships.”

Grant Funders Making It Possible
The Wheelyboat project would not have been possible without the generous support of several grant funders, including:

- Peter Harrison Foundation
- Duchy of Lancashire Benevolent Fund
- RYA Sailability Investment Fund
- Mather Family Trust
- Arnold Clarke Charitable Foundation
- Bernard Sunley Foundation

Important Safety Guidelines

This policy ensures the safety and comfort of all users and aligns with national safety standards. It is essential that all carers and support workers are made aware of this rule at the time of booking to avoid any disappointment.
