America 250 in Hartford, CT
As a proud affiliate of America 250 | CT, the ABGA supports the initiative’s themes to honor the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. Research, education, and programs support “Tell Inclusive Stories” by illuminating the history of the marginalized buried here, including African, African American, and Native people. Through the “Power of Place” and “Doing History” themes, we promote the Ancient Burying Ground as a living archive of family history and community identity.
The Ancient Burying Ground is a testament to the role of Hartford and our state’s role in shaping the American story, while also recognizing the struggles of many who were essential contributors to Hartford’s early history. We support “For the Common Good” by fostering the best standards in cemetery conservation, engaging diverse audiences through education and stewardship.
