Minute Review: Mercury Striking by Rebecca Zanetti

Mercury Striking (The Scorpius Syndrome, #1)
Mercury Striking by Rebecca Zanetti (The Scorpius Syndrome, Book 1)
My Rating: 3 of 5 stars

“If there are bullets, I’m between you and them. If you get taken, I’m hunting you down till my last breath. And if you end up in hell, I’ll storm the f*cking place until the fires go out.”

Mercury Striking was a whirlwind read for me, because every time I picked it up, I couldn’t seem to put it down without knowing what was coming next. It was a little more “alpha” than my usual read, but the overarching plot was intriguing and I’m curious to see what direction book 2 will take.

Recommendation: Read this if you love action-packed, post-apocalyptic romances full of alpha heroes and heroes-to-be. I also recommend this to romance readers who like comprehensive series plot despite each book focusing on a different main couple.

Minute Review: Viking Warrior Rising by Asa Maria Bradley

Viking Warrior Rising (Viking Warriors, #1)Viking Warrior Rising by As Maria Bradley (Viking Warriors, Book 1)
My rating: 2.5 of 5 stars

Frowning, he checked his tattoo. The head of the serpent grinned maliciously. He twisted to inspect the inside of his bicep. The rune right above the unfinished tail glowed brilliant gold. That couldn’t be right.

He sucked in a deep breath.

The dark-haired woman could not be his sjaelsfraende, his true mate. He shook his head and turned his arm back over to stare at his hand. It was faint, but he could make out the tail of a serpent just above the wrist. It couldn’t be. The poison must be playing with his system.

While the premise was intriguing and drew me in, the severe lack of communication between Lief and Naya ruined the romance for me – too much duty, fate, and secrecy, not enough growth.

Recommendation: Read this if you’re a fan of Norse mythology and you love the idea of hunky Viking Warriors finding their fated mates!

Review: Hard to Come By by Laura Kaye

Hard to Come By (Hard Ink, #3)

Hard to Come By by Laura Kaye
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

NOTE:  This review is for a book with mature content and sexy times!

Hard to Come By by Laura Kaye is the third full-length novel in the suspenseful Hard Ink series. It continues the saga from Marz’s perspective, as well as from Emilie’s, an innocent bystander and the sister of a man on the wrong side of the Hard Ink fight. This installment is essential to the overarching plot, so don’t skip it! If you haven’t read any of the previous stories, Kaye does do a good job of summarizing all the essential background info, but you’ll get a whole lot more out of the experience if you start with book one, Hard as It Gets.

I really liked this one, though to be fair, so far I’ve loved the whole series 🙂 Marz is the goofy, joking computer expert who always knows how to bring smiles to the group. He is also the surviving special forces team member who had to overcome the most severe injury – the loss of a leg. After everything he’s been through, it was a pleasure to read about him finding some deeper happiness of his own. Emilie is an excellent addition to the Hard Ink family, being intelligent, loyal, compassionate, and brave enough to do what needs to be done. I love how she didn’t treat Marz and his prosthetic with kid gloves. They really make an excellent pair.

In terms of addressing complex issues, Kaye did that again here. Not only did she shine some light on life after amputation, she also brought mental health, PTSD, and the complexities of family back into the spotlight. I love that these are suspenseful and romantic books that have both fluff and some serious substance.

Now, about tattoos, Marz has a bunch of them (24 to be exact). The one I loved the most is actually a concept he has for his next piece, which he’s hoping Jeremy can help him out with. It’s a large one on the back of his calf that would depict the inside of his leg as being bionic. There is one other VERY noteworthy tattoo in an… intimate place. I’m going to leave that one for future readers to discover on their own 😉

I’m excited to continue the series with the next novella, Hard to Be Good, and the next full-length installment, Hard to Let Go. I can’t wait for Beckett to get some feisty lady love and to learn how the series plot comes to a close!

PS – Here’s my favorite of Jeremy’s dirty t-shirts from this installment:

His dark red T-shirt had a drawing of a smiling fire extinguisher that said, “I put out.”

Review: Hard to Hold on To by Laura Kaye

Hard to Hold on To (Hard Ink, #2.5)

Hard to Hold on To by Laura Kaye
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

NOTE:  This review is for a book with mature content and sexy times!

Hard to Hold on To by Laura Kaye is a novella in the Hard Ink series, fitting in right between books 2 and 3. It starts up in the moments following the end of book 2 and focuses on Easy and Jenna as they help each other cope with a bunch of emotional trauma. It’s a wonderfully sweet story and my favorite of the series so far.

This could be read as a standalone by those interested in the series and wary of committing to a full-length novel, but it has so much more to offer if you’ve read books 1 and 2 first! I cannot recommend this series enough if you are a fan of suspenseful contemporary romance!

A quick note to series readers who are wondering if they can skip this one since it’s a novella: Yes, technically, but why would you??? For one thing, while no major developments occur, plenty of minor ones do, and this story definitely progresses the series. For another thing, Easy and Jenna are AWESOME!

Having just been rescued from a terrifying abduction, Jenna turns to Easy to help ground her during the panic she battles in the aftermath. They’ve had a connection since he was assigned as her protection detail for one night and the connection only grows as Easy helps her through the hardest few days of her life.

Any man willing to handle the tears and vomit of a strange woman to whom he owed absolutely nothing was someone worth getting to know better. That had to be in a girls’ guide to guys somewhere.

Easy is still suffering from PTSD and depression after the ambush that resulted in the death of his best friend and his own discharge from the military. I loved the way Kaye approached depression in this story. She didn’t shy away from the topic, one that is so prevalent among veterans, and she avoided the fairy tale ending of “true love immediately heals all wounds.” While I have no doubt that Easy and Jenna will overcome the horror in their pasts, the story makes it clear that recovery is a long and difficult road that is best traveled with the help of others.

She didn’t heal what was broken within him–he wasn’t that naive or delusional. But she sure as f**k made him remember the man he’d once been. Made him see glimpses of that man within the person he was right now. And made him believe maybe he could become that man again.

On a lighter note, there are more tattoos! Easy has a variety of them, but the showstopper is the quote he gets along the right side of his rib cage:

You were never created to live depressed, defeated, guilty, condemned, ashamed or unworthy. You were created to be victorious.

Once again, Kaye’s written a book that I know I will read again and again over the years. In fact, each book in the series fits that description. I can’t wait for the saga to continue with Marz’s story in Hard to Come By – I’m hoping to be able to add it to my list of keepers!

PS – Here’s my favorite of Jeremy’s dirty t-shirts from this installment:

It had the words, “The Man,” with an arrow pointing upward, followed by, “The Legend,” with an arrow pointing downward.

Review: Shadows Strike by Dianne Duvall

Shadows Strike (Immortal Guardians, #6)

Shadows Strike by Dianne Duvall
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

NOTE:  This review is for a book with mature content and sexy times!

Shadows Strike by Dianne Duvall is the sixth book in the Immortal Guardians series. This one focuses on Ethan, a younger Immortal with about a century under his belt, and Heather, a Gifted One with telepathy. If you haven’t read the preceding books, please do!

The series starts with Darkness Dawns, and if you love paranormal romance and warmhearted characters, this one is for you!

As usual with Duvall’s books, I raced through it. I love her approach to the “immortal warriors” sub-genre, as she depicts men and women who are badass AND considerate. Not to mention that their alpha nature is not used as an excuse to behave like assholes. Ethan and Heather were no different.

“I have the most absurd urge to ask you to promise me you won’t go out after dark anymore.”

“Um…”

“I know. It’s totally unreasonable.”

For those of you who are already fans of the series, Ethan’s story does not disappoint; it was an excellent continuation of the saga. There are a lot of lighthearted elements that reminded me of Roland and Sarah’s story in Darkness Dawns, as well as a ton of action and the introduction of even more key characters. We get to know Aidan a lot more and we revisit a bunch of old favorites. And of course, there’s baby Adira – not to mention all of our favorite Immortal Guardians doting on her.

A quick note about Aidan: I totally fell in love with him in this book. His loneliness in heart-wrenching, yet he opens himself up to the North Carolina team and even little Adira, protecting them with everything he has. My favorite scene, despite this being Ethan & Heather’s show, was Aiden’s teleportation chase.

Okay, time for my one persistent pet peeve with this series: each character’s apparent love of using the term “buttload,” or any variation thereof. I’ve turned my frustration with this into a game to see how many times I can spot the phrase. It seems to be helping. Maybe. This book’s buttload counter: 5

Even with the counter at 5, I love this series. I’m eager for the story continue, and I’m crossing my fingers that Aidan will be our next hero (though I have to say, I find Jared quite intriguing, too!). And hey, neither character has used “buttload” yet, so there’s hope that the count will be lower for their own features 😉

Review: Hard as You Can by Laura Kaye

Hard as You Can
Hard as You Can by Laura Kaye
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

NOTE:  This review is for a book with mature content and sexy times!

Hard as You Can by Laura Kaye is the second book in the Hard Ink series. It picks up right where the previous book left off, following the plot from Shane’s point of view as he and the rest of the Hard Ink team continue to investigate the Churchmen gang. This leads them back to Crystal, a waitress under the thumb of Jimmy Church and a potential ally.

The whole series revolves around a very complex and suspenseful plot, so I HIGHLY recommend starting with book one, Hard as It Gets. That being said, Kaye is good about succinctly summarizing the important background info throughout the first few chapters, so you won’t be too lost if you dive in with this one.

I’m going to write this review without getting into too much plot detail – it really is intricate, and if you enjoy suspenseful Paramilitary Romance storylines, you will like this one, too!

And yes, there are more tattoos – though not as many as in Hard as It Gets

“This is magnificent,” she said, tracing her fingers over the wing of the aggressive bald eagle that covered his skin from his neck most of the way down his back. Its sharp beak was open as if in a screech, and its talons seemed poised to grasp its prey. “Why?” she asked.

“Eagles are the kings of the birds of prey,” came his deep voice. They’re known for seeing what other creatures cannot and closing in on their prey before it even knows it’s being hunted.”

Aside from the captivating plot, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Shane and Crystal. Shane has Southern Heartbreaker charm down to a science, and Crystal is an incredibly strong person to survive Jimmy Church’s gang and her so-called boyfriend, Bruno. Due to their respective experiences, so much of this story is about Shane coaxing out Crystal’s trust. If you like romances with a substantial chase under seemingly impossible circumstances, this one is for you! While I really enjoyed this installment of the story, I found Crystal’s circumstances exhausting, and upon reaching the end, I was relieved to be facing a perspective change with the next book.

Speaking of the next book, this one was the perfect set up for the next in series, Hard to Hold on To, and I’m not ashamed to say that I dove right in with that one, too. So far, this is a great series and I’m quickly becoming a big fan of Kaye’s work.

Lastly, as an ode to Jeremy’s dirty t-shirt collection, I’ve decided to include my favorite from each book going forward. Here’s the winner from Hard as You Can:

“… a T-shirt with a log-holding beaver asking, ‘Are you looking at my wood?'”

*****

Trigger Warning:  Crystal has gone through hell with the Churchmen and her backstory reflects that, including torture and rape. It’s not quite all in the past, either, since she is still under the thumb of her boyfriend handler Bruno. Please read with caution if rape or abusive relationships are triggers for you.

Review: Hard as It Gets by Laura Kaye

Hard as It Gets
Hard as It Gets by Laura Kaye
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

NOTE:  This review is for a book with mature content and sexy times!

Hard as It Gets by Laura Kaye is the first book in the Hard Ink series. It follows Becca Merritt and Nick Rixey as they work together to find Becca’s missing brother. Over the course of investigating, Nick brings together the surviving members of his old special forces unit with hopes of rescuing Charlie. Not to mention the fact that the mayhem they’ve walked into could be the key to restoring his unit’s buried, but well-earned, honor.

Based on the cover and official synopsis of this book, I was expecting a contemporary romance novel with a lot of steamy scenes and tattoos, with a bit of a mystery thrown in. What I actually got was a pleasant surprise! There were plenty of steamy scenes, and steamy tattoos, but they were surrounded by an exciting and thoroughly developed, suspenseful plot.

This really is a perfect beach book: genuinely likable characters, sexy times, and a nail-biting suspense.

The other pleasant surprise was the fact that the story arc appears to run through the entire series, not just ending with this book. Kaye introduces us to this GREAT cast of characters banding together from all over to help Becca and Nick, each one with lead potential, and we get to stick with them for several more novels and novellas while we all get to the bottom of what is really going on.

Now, more about those tattoos:

Running almost the whole length of his spine, a dragon wrapped itself around a deadly black sword, hilt just below his neck, point at his lower back, ending near a mass of scars that traveled outward toward his hip and disappeared below the waistband of his jeans. The dragon’s wings spanned his shoulder blades, and the movement of his muscles made is appear alive, actually struggling to hold its perch on the steel. The red of the beast’s eyes looked out from the image, holding her gaze.

And quite possibly my favorite scene:

When he returned, he had a fistful of pens.

“What are they for?”

He crawled in bed next to her, then met her gaze. “I want to draw on you. Bad.”

I had a great time reading this book, and I’m looking forward to starting the next one, Hard as You Can. Especially since the saga continues from Shane’s perspective.

“Be careful, you guys. And good luck.”

Without looking back, Shane raised a hand and waved. “Ain’t no thing but a chicken wing.”
