MBT – physiological footwear?

While in the USA, being introduced to them by Adriana, I picked up a pair of MBT shoes:

MBT Shoes

For those who have not encountered them there is a certain amount of marketing hokum which goes on at excessive length about how some Swiss scientist worked out that Masai bushmen never had foot problems and had good posture, all due to walking on squishy stuff without shoes – all of which is irrelevant to me after my own determination that they are:

  • weird
  • damn comfortable

They need to be closely fitted (easier in the USA where they carry EU/half sizes) but they feel really good, and given the state of my knee[1] anything which reduces stress on the leg joints whilst firming up buttock muscles is a good thing.

I spent a lot of my childhood barefoot, so in some ways it is a familiar sensation.

The shoes really seem to work; I am still watching to see if/how they affect my foot but the knee really does feel looser after a day walking around the office in the MBTs.

The main challenge is that the sole is so thick (albeit squishy) that I risk cracking my head on doorway lintels.

[1] ie: functional, clicks a bit, “but don’t attempt marathons or long-distance costal walking” as my surgeon told me.
