Mel Gibson to slaughter Edge of Darkness?

Damn; EoD is one of the best things ever made for television, and they are letting Hollywood at it.

Specifically, they are letting Mel Gibson at it.

Damn.

And I’ll bet you that Darius Jedburgh is nothing like a fat, corrupt, CIA operative who obsesses over “Come Dancing”.

It’ll probably be Keanu Reeves, hooked on “American Idol”.

Or maybe J-Lo.

And it’s being filmed in Boston.

Sigh.

Empire: Movie News – Mel Gibson Going Back In Front Of Camera

Gibson has signed to take the lead in Edge of Darkness, a movie version of the 1985 BBC miniseries about a policeman whose daughter is murdered in front of him. The killing is initially thought to have been a bungled attempt on the policeman’s life, but he gradually discovers that might not be the case and his daughter may have kept some secrets from him.

    Oh No!

Only Bob Peck could play that. Someone who can sit still and just be grief-striken, just be, don’t act, and Joe Don Baker and oh no, please no not preppy Boston oh please make it stop…

  2. At least most of the team producing the film are the same as those who made the BBC series.

  3. It’s the Mel Gibson factor that’s killing it for me. If they said they were casting Kevin Spacey as the Bob Peck role I might have some confidence. Perhaps Sara Gilbert or Emma Watson as the Joanne Whalley character. Harrison Ford could be Jedburgh – he combines the “cowboy” characteristics Jedburgh shows early in the story with the more sensitive and thoughtful characteristics he reveals as the story progresses. I don’t see why Zoe Wanamaker couldn’t reprieve her role – I still think she rocks.

But you’re right, naming Mel Gibson in the lad role leads me to fear the casting Keanu Reeves, JLo, or worse still, Natalie “wooden as a clothes-peg” Portman, and the wilful misunderstanding of the story that implies. I don’t think I could bear another V for Vendetta.

If they absolutely MUST do a colonialised remake of EoD, then +1 for Spacey. Would punt Christina Ricci for the Whalley role, possibly… And I’d say Willem Dafoe for Jedburgh; can you imagine him doing the Gleneagles plutonium scene in full-on Green Goblin mode? Jedburgh is capable of being veeeeeeery nasty, and I think Dafoe’d also do a more convincing job of Jedburgh’s last stand against the special forces.

That said, I just think a remake has the potential to be so utterly made of fail that it really shouldn’t be done at all, especially not transplanted to the US and especially involving that nasty Gimpson fellow.

  5. A definite +1 for Kevin Spacey filling Bob Peck’s boots.

Natalie Portman could definitely fill Joanne Whalley’s role, provided she was to redicsover the acting talent she showed in “Leon” – otherwise, maybe Kirsten Dunst could make do with hair dye for a while?

Jedburgh, as you say, is a tough one. We need an actor of “a certain age” who can both play it straight, and appear to thoroughly lose it.

If he wasn’t a little too superannuated for the role, I’d suggest Eastwood – after all, Jedburgh doesn’t absolutely have to be physically unfit, and nobody else has made the big ol’ .44 quite as iconic on screen.

Hmm, I wonder if Tony Hopkins can do a decent American accent (or, if EoD is being transferred to Boston, maybe we need a *British* cop, in which case, he’d be perfect…) and would be interested in something of an action role for a change?

As has already been mentioned, it’s great to see that the original director will be in charge, so at least Gibson can’t mess that up.

Oh, and they’d *really* better get Eric Clapton back in, to do the soundtrack.
