Stephen Fry: It’s now very common to hear people say, “I’m rather offended by that”, as if that gives them certain rights

Mmmm.

He said: ‘It’s now very common to hear people say, “I’m rather offended by that”, as if that gives them certain rights. It’s no more than a whine. It has no meaning, it has no purpose, it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. “I’m offended by that.” Well, so fucking what?’

I love the “No shit Sherlock” statement. I’m rather tired of the political correctness ranting. Today, one can’t say “Dude, you’re so totally killer awesome” without having the authorities knocking at your door. Not that one should use the phrase “Dude, you’re so totally killer awesome”.

Of course, problems happen when it *does* give them certain rights. Rather a lot was written about such situations, this week.

Also, there are so many multiple standards depending on who takes offence at whom, that the whole thing really does become meaningless, “except when it isn’t”.
