Create Experiences

Teaching Conversational Spanish with AI

In 2024, Teaching with AI Fellow and Columbia Graduate School of Arts and Sciences student Flor Barceló created ProfesorX, an AI tool that supports student language learning.

The AI bot prompts students to participate in a low-stakes chat dialogue and practice the types of responses they might give in a conversational setting. The tool can help them identify errors but does not correct them, leaving space for the student or a partner to do this work in order to foster deeper language learning. Instructors can also direct the tool to focus on specific vocabulary or materials for more targeted exchanges with students.

Today, ProfesorX is available to faculty as a customizable Gemini Gem. Learn how you can adapt Flor’s prompt for your class below.
