STINFO instructions and procedures for improving service throughout AFIT

Purposes of this Guide

  • Awareness: It informs AFIT (Air Force Institute of Technology) faculty, students, and staff about STINFO (Scientific and Technical Information) policies and procedures, ensuring they understand the framework governing the handling of technical information.
  • Accessibility: It aims to make STINFO guidance and information readily available and easy to find, acting as a centralized resource for AFIT members.
  • Education: It fosters comprehension of STINFO requirements and responsibilities, helping AFIT members recognize their roles within the program.
  • Briefing: It provides an overview of STINFO methods, likely explaining how technical information is managed, shared, or restricted.
  • Training: It offers practical instruction on selecting and constructing complete distribution statements, which are critical for marking technical documents (e.g., theses, dissertations) to indicate their releasability.
  • Promotion: It encourages a broader understanding and appreciation of the STINFO program, emphasizing its importance within AFIT and the U.S. Air Force.

UPDATE: DoDI 5230.24 - January 10, 2023

On January 10, 2023, the DoD issued an updated Instruction for DISTRIBUTION STATEMENTS ON DOD TECHNICAL INFORMATION.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: The form and content of the markings for Distro A, B, C, D, E, or F have not been changed.

UPDATE: Classified Theses

If your thesis/dissertation is CLASSIFIED, you still must add the appropriate Distribution Statement.

UPDATE: Distribution Statement F

As of April 28, 2016 there are new policies in place for the use of Distribution F. DoD Instruction 5230.24, "Distribution Statements on Technical Documents" now prohibits the use of Distribution F on classified or unclassified scientific and technical documents. However, distribution statement F may be used under rare and exceptional circumstances when specific authority exists, or when need-to-know has been verified.
