With the release of the latest ABS fertility rate data, it was revealed that the nation’s Total Fertility Rate (TFR) had fallen to its lowest level on record, slumping to 1.50 babies per woman.
This compares unfavourably with the figure of 1.67 recorded immediately prior to the pandemic and the average for the 2010s of 1.82.

Officials forecast a 41% increase in egg prices this year in what some are calling “eggflation”. Where eggs are available, consumers are often limited in the number they can purchase at a time. Breakfast chains from Waffle House to Denny’s have added a surcharge of $0.50 for each egg served up.

The situation is driving some people to new places to source their eggs: over the southern border. US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has intercepted an increasing number of eggs from Mexico, where a carton of a dozen costs about $2. For comparison, the cost in many parts of California is just under $10 per dozen, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

Importing raw or fresh eggs into the US from Mexico is prohibited due to concerns about diseases such as highly pathogenic avian influenza – also known as bird flu – and another highly contagious avian illness called virulent Newcastle disease, said Roger Maier, a public affairs specialist with CBP.

Once confiscated, the eggs are destroyed by officials in oven-sized incinerators. Repeat offenders can be fined up to $10,000.

Paris, once a beacon of culture and European sophistication, has become an epitome of France’s failed migration policy. The case of the Gaîté Lyrique Theater, occupied for nearly three months by hundreds of immigrants, is one of the most salient examples of this situation, now almost at a point of no return. What began as an act of solidarity has turned into a dead-end scenario where violence, disorder, and economic ruin define the fate of this historic establishment.
On December 10 last year, around 250 immigrants, supported by pro-immigration organizations, forcefully took over the Gaîté Lyrique Theater. What was initially presented as the voluntary providing of humanitarian refuge quickly turned into an illegal occupation that completely paralyzed the venue’s operations. Loyal to a progressive ideological line, the theater’s management decided not to evict the occupants. However, the situation soon became unsustainable: scheduled events were canceled, economic losses reached hundreds of thousands of euros, and the venue’s security was severely compromised.
Over the months, the number of occupants has grown to 446, many of whom have been identified as adults despite claiming to be ”unaccompanied minors.”

On February 26th, the theater’s administration announced that it could no longer guarantee the building’s management, maintenance, or operation. In a desperate plea for help, management reported worsening violence inside the theater and declared that the establishment is in serious and imminent danger.” As a result, employees invoked their right to withdraw, leaving the venue without any operational management.
The case of Gaîté Lyrique Theater is not unique. Similar incidents are happening in many other European cities, including in Barcelona and Berlin, where cultural venues have been occupied by migrants.

“The government has abandoned cities in handling this crisis,” Léa Filoche, deputy to Socialist Anne Hidalgo in the Paris mayor’s office complained. But accusing the government of inaction is hypocritical. Anne Hidalgo’s Socialist administration of Paris has demonstrated complete ineffectiveness in managing this crisis. Instead of seeking realistic solutions, they have chosen to evade responsibility and blame the state for its “lack of interest” in the immigrants’ situation.

What the leadership of Paris, and those of many other Western European cities, are unwilling to confront is the root cause of the problem: a failed immigration policy driven by an idealistic approach to mass migration that ignores its real consequences on large European cities.

Engines may be unavailable for a variety of reasons, such as mechanical maintenance or crews on mandatory leave, but firefighters say this number is unusually high. On the same day, according to the data, at least a third of the statewide Hotshot crews — elite teams that fight large wilderness fires — were not staffed sufficiently to operate as intended.
In March, ProPublica reported that the nation’s wildland firefighting force was experiencing an exodus, especially among its most highly qualified firefighters. In the past three years, the Forest Service lost 45% of its permanent employees, forcing it to fill its ranks with inexperienced firefighters. Today, more than a third of U.S. counties, mostly in rural areas, particularly in the South and Midwest, don’t have a single obstetrician or birthing center. In 2022, the latest March of Dimes report on maternity deserts showed that 6.9 million U.S. women live in places where they struggle to get pre-natal or post-natal care.
From 1999 to 2019, the U.S.’s national maternal mortality rate more than doubled, going from 9.65 to 32.2 deaths per 100,000, according to the Journal of American Medicine. Even more shocking? The rate for Black women is 67.6 deaths per 100,000, three times higher than the rate for white women. In five states—Louisiana, New Jersey, Georgia, Arkansas and Texas—the maternal death rate for Black women increased by 93 percent over the decade.
Between 2011 and 2021, 25 percent of rural hospitals with OB units shut their doors to pregnant women. Many of those hospitals cited costs or staffing shortages, which are likely to get worse. In 2023, the number of medical students applying to ob-gyn residency programs declined by 5.2 percent overall, according to the American Medical Association. In places with new abortion bans, the decline is even steeper: in Texas, they dropped by 19 percent; in Alabama and Tennessee, they dropped by 21 percent.

Canada's total fertility rate dropped to its lowest point in more than a century of data-keeping in 2022, hitting just 1.33 children per woman, Statistics Canada said Wednesday.
Despite that decline, Canada's fertility rate was still higher in 2022 than the rates in South Korea (0.78), Spain (1.16), Italy (1.24) and Japan (1.26).
Comparable countries with higher fertility rates include France (1.8), the United Kingdom (1.52) and Germany (1.46).

These hunters, however, are not just on the front lines of an American tradition. Experts say they are also on the front lines of what could be a serious threat to public health: chronic wasting disease.
Researchers estimate that between 7,000 and 15,000 infected animals are unknowingly consumed by hunter families annually, a number that increases every year as the disease spreads across the continent. As World Antimicrobial Awareness Week commenced on Saturday, WHO Regional Director for Southeast Asia Poonam Khetrapal Singh said that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) continues to pose a significant challenge to global public health and has a devastating impact on the efficacy of essential medicines and the ability to effectively treat infectious diseases.

Health Minister Vlastimil Valek said he was considering restarting domestic production in the Czech Republic as a solution to the unavailability of medicines.
