Our History
The Court House Country Club was established in 1947, named in tribute to the historic Court House that safeguarded George Washington’s will. That same year, a dedicated committee of twenty Fairfax residents came together to explore the need for a private country club in the area. Recognizing a growing demand, the group selected a site deemed suitable for an eighteen-hole golf course.
On September 17, 1947, the Club was officially incorporated, and 121 acres of land were acquired. The committee, soon to become the Club’s first board of directors, began the transformation of the former dairy farm into a country club. In their spare time, these founding members carved out the first three golf holes and began converting the original farmhouse into a functioning clubhouse. Several of the farm’s original structures were preserved and became cherished landmarks of the new property.
The Club celebrated its official opening on June 26, 1948, welcoming members to enjoy four golf holes with temporary mowed greens. In 1949, the course expanded to nine holes, a tennis court was added, and a dining facility was introduced. That same year, the Club proudly hosted the final match of the Tri-State Golf League season.
By 1954, the course grew to a full eighteen holes, and in 1955, a new clubhouse, pool, and additional tennis courts were constructed. Membership surpassed 200 by the end of that year. In 1958, the entire golf course was redesigned, and both a new tennis clubhouse and an additional court were added.
In 1963, the Club adopted its current name, The Country Club of Fairfax. Later that decade, five new golf holes were introduced, while five of the original holes were designated for practice play. Winter of 1983 brought the Club’s first tennis bubble, allowing year-round play despite Virginia’s cold months.
A full renovation of the Clubhouse began in 1990 and was completed in 1992, transforming its rustic charm into refined elegance. In 2005, the Club added a new pool and wellness center, followed by a modern turf maintenance and cart storage facility in 2010. Most recently, in 2025, five golf holes were redesigned to enhance the playing experience.
Today, the Club’s facilities are a far cry from its modest beginnings, yet the spirit of collaboration and community that inspired its founding remains at the heart of everything we do.
