    An Indiana learner’s permit allows new drivers to practice driving under supervision before obtaining a driver’s license. You can obtain a learner’s permit as early as 15 years old.
  • How do I apply for a learner’s permit?

    To apply for your permit, visit a Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) branch with proof of identity, Social Security number, lawful status, and Indiana residency. You must pass a vision screening and a written knowledge test. If you’re under 18, you must also submit a signed Agreement of Financial Liability from a parent or guardian.   • How many questions are on the Indiana permit test?

    The Indiana permit test includes questions on traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices. It consists of 50 questions, of which 34 are on road rules and 16 on road signs. You must correctly answer at least 28 road rules questions and 14 road sign questions to pass (84%).

Probationary & Unrestricted Driver’s License FAQ

  • What is an Indiana probationary driver’s license?

    A probationary driver’s license is issued to individuals under 21 and comes with certain restrictions that gradually phase out as the driver gains experience.
  • What are the requirements to obtain a probationary license?

    To qualify, you must hold a learner’s permit for at least 180 days, complete 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night), and pass a driving skills test. You will have the decision on whether or not you enroll in driver education as a probationary driver. If you choose not to, you will be required to wait for an extra 180 before you can apply for the license.
  • What are the restrictions of a probationary license?

    • Nighttime Driving: For the first 180 days, you cannot drive between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. After that, and until turning 18, additional restrictions apply:
      • Saturday and Sunday, between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.
      • Sunday through Thursday, after 11 p.m.
      • Monday through Friday, before 5 a.m.
    • Passenger Restrictions: During the first 180 days, you cannot drive with passengers unless accompanied by a licensed instructor, a driver 25 or older, or a spouse who is at least 21. Siblings and step-siblings are exempt from this rule.
  • When does the probationary license expire?

    Your probationary license expires 30 days after your 21st birthday. A day after your 21st birthday, you will be eligible to upgrade to your full, unrestricted driver’s license.
  • When can I get a full, unrestricted driver’s license?

    Once you turn 21, your probationary license restrictions will be lifted, and you will qualify for a full Indiana driver’s license. If you are over the age of 21 and haven’t had a probationary license, you may obtain your full driver’s license 180 days after applying for your learner’s permit.
