Zonation GUI is a Windows desktop application for spatial conservation prioritization, developed by the Biodiversity Conservation Informatics Group at the University of Helsinki. It provides an intuitive interface to the Zonation core algorithms, helping planners and researchers identify and rank areas that collectively retain the highest biodiversity value while accounting for costs, connectivity, and other real-world constraints. The GUI streamlines project setup, scenario management, and results exploration, making advanced prioritization accessible without coding.

Key capabilities:

  • Multi-criteria prioritization across species, habitats, and other biodiversity features
  • Hierarchical ranking that preserves complementarity across the landscape
  • Integration of costs, condition, masks, and constraints to reflect planning realities
  • Options to account for connectivity and fragmentation
  • Flexible weighting and grouping of features to reflect priorities and targets
  • Scenario comparison to test trade-offs and sensitivities
  • Interactive visualization of priority maps, performance curves, and summary statistics
  • Export of outputs for use in standard GIS workflows

Typical inputs and outputs:

  • Inputs: species distribution or habitat suitability rasters, cost/condition layers, optional masks and connectivity inputs
  • Outputs: continuous priority (rank) maps, feature/group performance curves, and summary tables for reporting and GIS analysis

Who it’s for:

  • Conservation agencies, NGOs, and land-use planners designing protected area networks, ecological corridors, and restoration priorities
  • Researchers conducting biodiversity assessments and evaluating policy or management scenarios

Developed and maintained by the Biodiversity Conservation Informatics Group, University of Helsinki.
