FAQ

How do I install ZipUP® Ceiling wall trim if both sides of my deck are flush with the joists?

If your deck’s joists are flush on both sides, you’ll need to add a mounting surface for the ZipUP® Ceiling wall trim. Install a 2×4 or 2×6 board on edge along the bottom of the end or rim joist. Secure it firmly using 5-inch or 8-inch exterior-grade screws. This creates the necessary edge for attaching the wall trim, ensuring a secure and level fit for your ZipUP® UnderDeck or ZipUP® Ceiling system.

No. ZipUP® Ceiling and UnderDeck panels cannot be spliced or joined to extend their length. Doing so will compromise the waterproof seal and lead to leaks in the system. For a durable, leak-free installation, always use panels cut to the proper length for your project.

Store all ZipUP® Ceiling and UnderDeck components in a clean, level area, protected from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Keeping the product flat and shaded helps prevent warping, discoloration, or damage prior to installation.

Any support or drop beam must be flashed along the top to direct water onto the ZipUP® panels. Proper flashing ensures that rainwater flows into the waterproof ceiling system instead of seeping around the beam, helping maintain a leak-free underdeck area.

When a drop-down support beam is present, treat each side of the beam as a separate installation area and calculate materials for both sections. For accurate measurements and to ensure you order the correct amount of ZipUP® Ceiling or UnderDeck components, use the Material Calculator available on ZipUPCeilings.com.

For best results, ZipUP® recommends using 3-inch exterior-grade deck screws to secure the pitch rails. For the wall trim and main rails, use 1-inch or 1¼-inch roofing screws with rubber grommet. These fasteners provide the necessary strength and corrosion resistance for a long-lasting, weatherproof installation.

For a typical 250 sq. ft. deck, you will generally need about 60 of the 3-inch exterior-grade deck screws and approximately 100 roofing screws with rubber grommets. Quantities may vary depending on your specific deck layout, so always review your project plan or use the ZipUP® Material Calculator for accurate estimates.

There are three common installation methods for covering a cantilever area:

  1. Pitch panels outward to the cantilever edge and leave it open so water drips directly off the panels.

  2. Pitch panels outward to the cantilever edge and install a gutter at the end to channel water away from the space.

  3. Pitch panels back toward the support beam and install a gutter along the beam. This option will require gutters on both sides of the support beam for proper water management.

Choosing the best method depends on your deck’s design, desired drainage control, and aesthetic preference.

ZipUP® strongly recommends using ZipUP® pitch rails to ensure proper fit, ease of installation, and reduced future maintenance issues. While treated lumber can be used for pitch rails if installed correctly, it may not provide the same long-term performance, alignment, or compatibility as the ZipUP® system components.

For both Beachwood and Sequoia ZipUP® Ceiling or UnderDeck panels, ZipUP® recommends using black wall trim and black main rails. This color combination provides a clean, finished look and complements the panel colors for a cohesive design.

ZipUP® does not recommend painting or altering the panels, as this can affect the finish, performance, and warranty. However, if you choose to paint, use a latex-compatible paint and ensure the panels are clean and completely dry before applying.

NOTE: Painting over the panel joint lines may make it difficult to remove panels later and could cause paint to chip or peel during removal. If removal is needed, it is best to score the joint lines first. ZipUP® panels are available in a variety of colors designed to complement most deck and outdoor styles without the need for customization.

Yes. ZipUP® Ceiling and UnderDeck systems are designed to work with most deck structures, including wood, composite, and steel joist framing. They can be installed on new or existing decks and are compatible with almost any deck size and joist spacing. Proper installation and maintaining the recommended slope are essential for ensuring compatibility, effective drainage, and long-term performance.

ZipUP® panels are available in 12-foot and 16-foot lengths to accommodate a variety of deck sizes and layouts. For projects requiring lengths over 16 feet, seam trims are available. For help determining the best panel lengths for your project, contact ZipUP® with your plans and measurements, or use the Material Calculator on ZipUPCeilings.com.

Many homeowners successfully install ZipUP® systems themselves using standard tools and our step-by-step instructions. However, hiring a professional contractor can help ensure optimal slope, waterproofing, and finish—especially on large or complex decks.

No special tools are required. Basic tools such as a tape measure, drill, level, and saw are all you need to install ZipUP® Ceiling or UnderDeck systems.  See our install guide for complete details.

ZipUP® recommends a minimum slope of  ½ inch increments of drop every 3 feet, to ensure water drains efficiently. Maintaining this slope helps prevent standing water, reduces the risk of leaks, and extends the life of your ZipUP® Ceiling or UnderDeck system.

Example: For a 12-foot-deep deck, you would need a 2-inch total slope from the house to the outer edge. This equals four ½-inch drops measured every 3 feet along the length of the deck.

When installed correctly, ZipUP® UnderDeck creates a water-tight barrier that channels rainwater away from the space below. It is designed to handle typical outdoor weather conditions, but proper slope and gutter installation are essential for maximum performance.

NOTE: The number one cause of leaks in underdeck systems is improper flashing. Always properly flash at the house end, around any beams, and at all areas where water could penetrate.

Yes. ZipUP® systems are made from durable, weather-resistant PVC materials designed to handle snow, ice, and typical water exposure. Regular maintenance to remove excessive buildup is recommended to prolong the life of the system. It is important to check your gutters and downspouts regularly to ensure proper water drainage and prevent overflow that could impact your ZipUP® Ceiling or UnderDeck system.

No. A common misconception is that the ZipUP® UnderDeck system traps moisture and restricts airflow, leading to water damage or rot in the deck joists. In reality, ZipUP® is engineered to hang from a 2¼-inch main rail, creating ample space for air circulation between the deck joists and the panels. This design allows the area to dry as needed and prevents standing water from affecting the joists when installed and maintained correctly. To ensure proper airflow, keep the spaces between above-deck boards free of leaves, dirt, and other debris.

If natural debris such as leaves or pine needles builds up on your ZipUP® panels, carefully remove every other panel—or only the blocked panels as needed—following the Panel Removal instructions. Manually remove large debris by hand, then use a garden hose starting at the highest point to wash any remaining debris down the panels and through the gutter system to restore proper water flow.

Rinse any panels that have been removed before reinstalling. For cleaning, use a non-abrasive cleaner or mild soap and water. Always keep the spacing between deck boards above free and clear of debris to maintain proper airflow. For additional care guidelines, refer to your decking brand’s maintenance recommendations.

Note: A power washer may be used, but it is not highly recommended. If used, operate at the lowest setting to avoid scratching or damaging the ZipUP® panels.

Yes. ZipUP® panels can be unzipped and removed individually, allowing for quick access to the space above or for easy panel replacement when needed.

Panel Removal Instructions:

  1. Push up firmly in the center of the panel you wish to remove (removal is easiest from the center of its length).

  2. Using a tool with a wide, strong, straight edge—such as a mini pry bar—insert the tool into the exposed part of the panel edge next to the bead.

  3. Gently pull down until the seal is broken and a small gap appears.

  4. Repeat this step on the opposite side of the panel across from the first gap.

  5. Once the seal is broken on both sides, pull down to “unzip” the panel along its full length.

Note: After removing a panel, you will need to re-seal along the wall trim (or seam rail, if applicable) when reinstalling to maintain a water-tight system.
