Wandjina

Near Derby, Western Australia, we visited a very interesting art center at the Mowanjum Community. It was the first time I heard a hopeful story..

The People from the northern part of the Kimberleys, who are now located at Mowanjum near Derby, believe in the Wandjina Spirit. They repaint the images to ensure the continuity of the Wondjina’s presence and protection.

From their website http://www.mowanjumarts.com :

“Every race of people has a culture to follow.

If you lose your culture you are floating… lost.

The Mowanjum artists are strong and they know it is their job to pass on their knowledge to young people, to keep the spirit of the Wandjina alive.

Poem Of The One World

By Mary Oliver (A Thousand Mornings)

This morning
The beautiful white heron
Was floating along above the water

And then into the sky of this
The one world
We all belong to

Where everything
Sooner or later
Is a part of everything else

Which thought made me feel
For a little while
Quite beautiful myself.
