Medevac Charters

Medical charter flights are specialized air ambulance services that transport patients swiftly and safely by air. Whether it’s a critical care flight to save a life after an accident or a non-emergency transfer for a recovering patient, these charters provide 24/7 medical transportation on dedicated aircraft. They serve a global audience – from individual patients and families to hospitals, insurers, and even government agencies – ensuring that anyone in need can reach advanced medical care in time.

What Are Medical Flight Charters?

Medical flight charters refer to private aircraft services outfitted as flying ambulances to carry ill or injured individuals who cannot safely travel by normal means. Unlike commercial flights, these Medevac charters are essentially mobile intensive care units (ICUs) in the sky. They come equipped with life-support equipment, medication, and highly trained medical crews to care for patients en route. Medical charters range from small turboprops handling regional hops to long-range jets for intercontinental travel, and even helicopters for short-distance emergency evacuations.

Air Ambulance vs. Standard Flights

Flying on a commercial airline with a serious medical condition can be impractical or dangerous. Medical charters eliminate the hurdles of commercial travel – no long security lines, no crowded cabins, and schedules that depart on your timetable. Importantly, a Zela Jet medical flight charter offers bed-to-bed service, meaning the provider often arranges ground ambulances at both the departure and arrival, ensuring continuity of care from the sending hospital to the receiving facility. In short, a medical charter is all about dedicated, immediate medical transport, whereas standard flights cannot accommodate critical medical needs.

Types of Medical Flight Services

Like many international medical charter flight companies, Zela Jet offers several service categories to meet different needs:

Emergency Air Ambulance (Medevac)

For life-threatening situations like severe trauma, stroke or critical illness where speed is paramount. These flights are staffed with critical care teams and advanced life support equipment to stabilize patients in flight. Medevac charters can launch on short notice to evacuate patients from remote areas (such as islands or disaster zones) to major hospitals.

Non-Emergency Medical Flights

For patients who aren’t in immediate danger but cannot tolerate commercial travel. This includes individuals with limited mobility, those requiring oxygen or a stretcher, or anyone who simply needs a more comfortable, private travel environment post-surgery or during long-term care. Non-emergency charters prioritize comfort and convenience, often allowing family on board and avoiding the stress of normal airports.

Medical Repatriation

These are flights to bring a patient back to their home country or preferred hospital, common for travelers or expatriates who fall ill abroad. For example, if a patient in Greece needs advanced treatment in the U.S., Zela Jet's medical charter jet can fly them quickly to the appropriate facility. Our air ambulance crew handles complex logistics like international clearances and work to ensure continuity of care during long-distance transfers.

Specialty Transports

Our charter services cater to unique medical scenarios. This can include pediatric and neonatal air ambulances equipped for infants and children, with teams trained in neonatal and pediatric advanced life support. It also covers organ transplant charters, which rapidly fly organs or transplant patients to transplant centers, and VIP medical flights for high-profile individuals requiring discretion and top-tier care. In all cases, the aircraft are configured with the necessary equipment (incubators, isolation units, etc.) to meet the patient’s specific needs.

Medical Escort on Commercial Flights

While not a charter flight, Zela Jet also offer medical escorts where a nurse or doctor accompanies a stable patient on a scheduled airline. This is a cost-effective alternative for non-critical cases, but for any situation requiring continuous monitoring or life support, a dedicated medical charter is the safer choice.

Who Uses Medical Flight Charters?

For individuals suffering a serious injury or illness far from home – such as a traveler who has an accident abroad or a patient in a rural area – a medical charter is often the lifeline that gets them to the care they urgently need. Families rely on air ambulances to transfer loved ones to specialized hospitals (for trauma, stroke, burns, etc.), to bring patients home for hospice or continued recovery, or even to enable travel for those who cannot fly commercially. Knowing that a dedicated team will handle every aspect (ground ambulance, in-flight care, communication with doctors) provides enormous peace of mind in a crisis. Families also appreciate the compassionate support many providers offer during what is often a stressful time – for example, keeping relatives informed at every step and even accommodating a family member onboard when possible.
Hospitals frequently arrange medical charter flights as part of patient care plans. Case managers and discharge planners, especially at tertiary or specialty hospitals, may coordinate with air ambulance services to retrieve a patient from another facility or send a patient to one. For example, if a small hospital in Greece cannot perform a needed neurosurgery, the case manager might organize an air ambulance to a larger hospital in Athens or even to London.
Insurers (health insurance or travel insurance providers) have a vested interest in medical charter planes when covered members require emergency evacuation. A timely medevac air ambulance can be life-saving and can also reduce the insurer’s costs in the long run by getting the patient to an appropriate facility sooner. Many international travel insurance plans explicitly include emergency medical evacuation benefits, and these companies work closely with air ambulance providers to activate a flight when a policyholder is critically ill abroad.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need an air ambulance or if a commercial flight with a nurse will suffice?
It depends on the patient’s condition. Air ambulances (medical charters) are recommended if the patient is in critical condition or requires active medical interventions (e.g. IV medications, oxygen, ventilation) that can’t be managed on a commercial flight.
Are medical flight charters available 24/7, and how fast can they respond in an emergency?
Yes, reputable medical charter services operate 24/7/365. Emergencies don’t wait for business hours, and neither do air ambulances. The coordination centers are staffed around the clock with flight and medical coordinators. In terms of response speed: it’s impressively fast. At Zela Jet, we can launch a mission in just a few hours after the initial call, provided logistics (like flight permits and crew availability) line up.
Can family members or companions travel with the patient on a medical charter?
Often, yes – one of the benefits of a medical charter is that it usually has some seating for companions, unlike a small ambulance helicopter or certainly unlike a single-patient ground ambulance. Most air ambulance jets can accommodate at least one and sometimes two family members or companions to fly alongside the patient (space permitting). Having a loved one nearby can be hugely reassuring to the patient.
What measures are in place to ensure patient safety during a medical flight?
Patient safety is ensured through multiple layers of precautions: accreditation standards, specialized training, top-notch equipment, and protocols.
Do your medical charters handle international travel and customs for patients?
Yes. International air ambulance transports are a big part of what our medical charter company do, and they are very experienced in navigating customs, immigration, and international regulations on behalf of the patient. If a patient is being flown from one country to another (say, from Greece to the U.S.), the air ambulance provider takes care of getting landing rights and flight clearances in all relevant countries, as well as arranging customs/immigration at the destination. Patients traveling on a medical charter still need to have valid passports/visas as required, but the process at the airport is generally expedited.
What if the patient’s condition changes or worsens mid-flight?
Medical charters are prepared for that. The onboard medical team continuously monitors the patient, and if any sign of trouble arises, they act immediately. They carry emergency medications and equipment to manage critical events. For example, if a patient goes into cardiac arrest (worst-case scenario), they have a defibrillator and medications to attempt resuscitation just as an ICU or ER would. If a patient is in pain, they adjust sedation/pain relief.

We had a fantastic long weekend in Santorini and Mykonos to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday, and flying with ZelaJet helicopter made the experience truly unforgettable. From start to finish, the service was exceptional — seamless assistance with transfers, perfect coordination with our hotels, and outstanding punctuality and professionalism.

Our captain was incredibly skilled and knowledgeable about the Cyclades region, making us feel safe and well-guided throughout. Soaring above the sparkling Aegean and admiring the Cycladic islands from the sky is a memory our family will cherish forever.

A heartfelt thank you to Kostas for his dedicated support throughout the entire journey. Highly recommended!

We spent 2 weeks honeymooning in Greece, and ZelaJet was one of the best parts of our trip. I know that may sound crazy, but the service, the experience, and the time we spent working with and enjoying the amenities Zela offers made it one of the most memorable aspects of our time.

Kostas helped us from the very beginning of our inquiry and helped get us two helicopters (one from Ios to Milos and the second from Milos to Chania). He was prompt, professional, and made the experience seamless. Pricing was also competitive with other operators in the area.

Our pilot, Tony, was equally amazing. He was friendly, prompt, and helped guide us through the whole experience. This was our first time flying in a helicopter, and he made it fun and talked us through everything.

I would implore anyone considering private transportation services to book with ZelaJet. There is no part of the experience that was anything less than top-notch, and there is no reason to consider any alternative.

We will absolutely use ZelaJet in the future. Heck, we are going to revisit Greece sooner rather than later just so we can use them again! It was truly that amazing of an experience.

Captain Dimitrius Stathias was our pilot in what seemed a brand new helicopter. We flew with six people from Milo's to Athens Airport. It was an amazing smooth ride, and our pilot was clearly a seasoned professional. I have been in many helicopters but this one was solid, safe, and even with the rediculous bag size my wife had, able to still get off the ground . Everything was perfect !
