Grooved runway

Simplified Short Approach Lighting System (SSALS)

We completed fortification of our Simplified Short Approach Lighting System (SSALS) to mitigate infrastructure damage caused by floods and other extreme weather events. We also began planning and designing for the addition of Runway Alignment Indicator Lights (RAILs). Once installed, YCD will have an upgraded lighting system, referred to as Simplified Short Approach Lighting System with Runway Alignment Indicator Lights (SSALR). This system will increase visibility for pilots on final approach, improve safety, and enhance landing reliability.
2022
runway and taxi rehabilitation

Our 6,602-foot runway and associated taxiways were resurfaced with new asphalt, providing for better stability and a longer working life. The NAC team and our contractors worked with air carriers and other airport business partners to arrange a resurfacing work schedule where only portions of the runway were shut down at any time which minimized disruptions to flight operations. This project will be fully completed in 2023 when the runway will be grooved. Grooving the runway will help to displace water and reduce hydroplaning to provide increased braking action.
runway end safety areas

We added a new gravel safety zone at each end of the runway as an important additional safety measure to support aircraft landings and takeoffs. These large, flat areas provide an extra margin of protection in the unlikely event an aircraft overruns the runway, ensuring a safer operating environment for pilots, passengers, and airlines. In keeping with our commitment to sustainability, the zones were constructed using recycled milled asphalt from previous apron and runway projects, following the careful removal of existing organic material. This approach not only enhanced safety but also allowed us to reduce waste and make efficient use of resources already available on site.
approach lighting fortification

Extensive rains and the subsequent flooding of Haslam Creek during the fall of 2021 and winter of 2022 pushed fallen trees and debris into the creek, dangerously close to our Simplified Short Approach Lighting System (“SSALS”). To remain operational, we installed large protective boulders around the bases of our SSALS infrastructure. Additionally, we worked with federal, provincial, and local agencies to stabilize the banks of Haslam Creek to minimize the risk of flood damage to our lighting system until the SSALS can be installed on concrete piles in 2023.
2021
ev charging stations installed

Nanaimo Airport has enhanced our customer service and environmental commitment with the opening of four electric vehicle fast-charging stations. Two stations are in the main parking lot outside the terminal building and the other two are in the rental car area. Drivers can fully charge most Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) in one hour allowing a driving range of around 400 km.
expansion of emergency services

We expanded our Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (“ARFF”) shelter for our second ARFF truck and upgraded the ARFF emergency response trailer. Additional staff were trained to bolster our emergency services crew. Our ARFF capacity allows us to maintain a CAT6 safety grouping used by the aviation industry. Our fleet also acquired a self-propelled snowblower truck to enhance our snow – clearing services for the safety of all airport users.
addition of apron concrete panels

We replaced the aging asphalt with newly constructed, enhanced concrete pads in the critical areas where aircraft park, load, unload, and refuel. These durable concrete surfaces are specifically designed to better withstand the significant weight and constant activity of the diverse fleet of aircraft that operate at YCD. By investing in this infrastructure, we not only improved the long-term resilience and reliability of our airfield but also reduced the need for frequent maintenance, minimizing disruptions for airlines and passengers. This upgrade ensures that our airport remains safe, efficient, and well-equipped to support current and future aviation demands.
