About grmpyprogrammer

Bio

Your least favourite PHP hater’s least favourite programmer.

RetailMeNot Group DEI hire, building global shopper loyalty infrastructure from my snowy Fortress In Exile in Canada.

I used to write books and go to PHP conferences to shout at people to write tests for their PHP code. Still a legend in the eyes of some.

Whenever there is a war I think about how my paternal grandfather, drafted into the German army in WW2, ended up in the siege of Stalingrad and his capture and imprisonment in a prison labour camp in Siberia by the Russians was justified as punishment for “stealing a loaf of bread”.

Every government when faced with terrible results in war pulls some bullshit to punish people.

Went to my local record shop (https://odysseyrecords.ca/) and while buying an MF Doom record I noticed an album at the register. It said “Geese Getting Killed” on the cover and I snap-bought it because Canada Geese are monsters that need to be dealt with.

It says a lot about how propagandized one can get about streaming music options that I continually forget that I have Bandcamp on my phone and reflexively reach for Apple Music when I wish to listen to non-vinyl options in my office.

(Brought to you by a reminder about Angine De Poitrine’s latest release and now I am listening to their first release)

I guess we are going to find out if the US legal system gives a shit about a large corporate entity spying on customers in a way not even hinted at in their terms and conditions.

I am going to say LOL no of course not.

“No punishment. No investigation. Carry on, patriots”

“Governments are unable to meet their goals without heavy borrowing because they are not bringing in enough in tax revenue. The solution, of course, is to continue to reduce the amount of taxes we ask corporations, rich people, and high-income earners to pay. We believe it is the great masses, who have seen their productivity slashed in half due to working conditions, wage theft, and affordability issues who will magically solve everything. I am a high-income earner from the elite classes working for rich people and corporate interests — this makes total sense!”

I am seeing lots of people on here who are clearly stuck in “I agree with pro-AI arguments because my job depends on it”

Saying anti-AI people have “lost the plot” because they choose to block a social media bot slurping up their posts is your literal “no, it is the kids who are wrong” moment.

I had been working on this project (https://github.com/nevermore3d/Nevermore_Micro/tree/master?tab=readme-ov-file#bom-v4) for a while and it was time to splice some wires and hook it all up. I suck at soldering and the wires are SUPER tiny.

Nothing works. Dunno if it’s the fan that is broken or my soldering was garbage. But I was dumb and superglued the fan in place BEFORE testing it all. So now I need to reprint the plenum AND get new fans. Then when I splice the wires I will make sure the damn thing works before I super glue it. Might even go with WAGO connectors instead to make it easier.

The anniversary of my dad dying is coming up in a few weeks. It’s weird looking out at my back yard and thinking “I am likely to only get 25-30 more springs before I die too.”

For most of the last decade I have been telling my programmer friends to really work on building a life away from the keyboard. I saw what OSS work was doing to people.

I gave up on OSS work because I decided I wanted to be paid to do that kind of work and it wasn’t going to happen. I know a lot of folks thought I was being mercenary about it.

Good on Mr. Reitz for sharing.
