When a young boy visits his grandmother’s house, he doesn’t just see scraps of ribbon lying around, mushrooms clustered under a log in the forest, or shells hiding along the beach. He sees tiny worlds where pie tins become playgrounds, ants become farmers, and tide pools teem with life waiting to be explored. Tiny worlds are full of whimsy and imagination, but they have one problem: He seems to be the only one who sees them. While at first Grandma keeps trying to draw him out, to a busy park or the beach or the zoo, eventually she realizes that her grandson’s tiny worlds are big enough for her to meet him there. In her authorial debut, Brittany Cicchese offers a touching story and warm illustrations that celebrate the connection between a child and grandparent and encourage readers to appreciate the little things in life—and the sensitive souls who lead us to them.

A young boy is on a trip to his grandmother’s house in which he sees tiny worlds to be explored. The only problem with these tiny worlds that he finds amazing and full of wonder is that no one else can see them. Grandma seems to be on a mission to draw him away from home until she comes to realize that maybe her grandson’s tiny world is big enough for her to explore with him.
What I Liked: This book introduces you to a young boy and the various items he finds at his grandmother’s house to put into his tiny world. His fascination with the small things has his grandma trying to connect with him by bringing him outdoors. Even when outdoors, the child finds ways to connect it back to his tiny world and shows his grandmother the beauty in the small things. Once he has expressed his fear in that others not seeing the beauty and whimsy in small things, his grandmother’s perspective shifts as she listens to him.
There are many whimsical moments throughout this book that are further illustrated through the beautiful images shown throughout. The illustrations included in this book highlight the small details in the tiny worlds that the young boy is exploring with his grandma especially as he sets things up when he finds them around the house. There are also moments that we see the beauty in tiny worlds outside such as the tide pools that were unexplored because people were missing what was right in front of them.
Final Verdict: Tiny Worlds: A Story About Appreciating the Small Things is a tender and heartwarming story about bringing two generations together and showcasing that older generations can learn from younger ones. This book is perfect for introverts as they see themselves being celebrated through this book and the relationship the child has with his grandmother.
