As the Laser Beamline Lead for Phoenix, you will own, and be accountable for, the proper operation of Phoenix beamlines – a state-of-the-art collection of seed lasers and optics. You will receive requested experiments from the Xcimer science team and you will use your technical and operational expertise in laser and optical systems to develop the beamline operations schedule for experiments, maintenance, and system upgrades. You will lead engineers and technicians in completing this work – ensuring the laser and optical systems function when needed for tests. You will also lead post-experiment data reviews to confirm proper system function and determine if additional system work is needed ahead of the next experiments.
In addition to serving as Laser Beamline Lead, you will learn from our subject matter experts and be one of the first to formally qualify for a role on the shot operations team. Once qualified, you will serve on the shot operations team for some of the Phoenix experiments – leading system controllers and operators to execute critical procedures in our laser experiment operations. As a Principal Manufacturing Development Engineer, you will be responsible for developing automated equipment and manufacturing processes that enable reliable, repeatable production at increasing volumes. You will take ownership of automated manufacturing projects from concept through deployment, working closely with mechanical, electrical, controls, manufacturing, quality, facilities, and systems engineering partners. This role requires a hands-on engineer who is comfortable moving between design, prototyping, implementation, and troubleshooting in a fast-moving development environment.
This position offers the opportunity to significantly influence manufacturing capability, throughput, and system reliability across multiple hardware platforms critical to fusion energy development.
Develop Advanced Automated Manufacturing Equipment: Lead the design and implementation of automated manufacturing systems incorporating industrial robotics, motion systems, sensing, and vision technologies. Define system architectures that prioritize reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
Controls and System Integration: Support controls engineers, who will develop and integrate electrical and controls systems using industrial PLCs, standard communication protocols, and HMI platforms. Support data acquisition and performance monitoring to evaluate and improve system behavior. Work with controls engineers to integrate industrial robotic systems to improve consistency, precision, and production efficiency within automated manufacturing cells.

Manufacturing Process Optimization: Evaluate and improve automated manufacturing workflows by analyzing cycle times, material flow, automation ROI, and work-in-process buffering to support consistent production output.
Technical Documentation and Handover: Create comprehensive documentation including electrical and pneumatic schematics, bills of materials, maintenance documentation, spare parts lists, and troubleshooting guides to support long-term operation.

As a Process Engineer in the Materials & Process Engineering Department, you will work closely with our capacitor manufacturing team to develop, optimize, and scale manufacturing processes critical to Xcimer’s fusion systems. Develop, optimize, and scale manufacturing processes for capacitor production, with a focus on coatings, materials integration, and process robustness.
Define end-to-end process flows, including process steps, key parameters, control limits, and acceptance criteria.
Design, write, and execute detailed test plans to evaluate new materials, coatings, and process changes.
Plan and conduct Design of Experiments (DOE) to systematically improve yield, performance, and manufacturability.
Work directly with the capacitor manufacturing team to run experiments, collect data, and implement process improvements on the production line.
Analyze test results, identify root causes, and translate findings into actionable process changes.
Generate clear, thorough documentation, including process specifications, work instructions, test reports, and manufacturing change documentation.
Support the insertion of new or modified processes into the manufacturing line, including qualification, validation, and handoff to production.

Education: MS in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related engineering or science discipline (or equivalent experience).
Experience: 5+ years of industrial experience developing, optimizing, and scaling manufacturing processes in a production or pilot-scale environment.
Strong understanding of process development, process control, and scale-up principles.
Hands-on experience designing and executing test plans and DOE.

Ability to independently troubleshoot complex process and materials issues.

As an Experimental Physicist in the fields of optical imaging and spectroscopy, you will be collaborating with a team of engineers and scientists on identifying physics problems and risks associated with building high energy pulsed laser systems, proposing experiments, and designing, building, and operating advanced imaging and spectroscopic experiments in the fields of pulsed plasma imaging, high speed imaging, spectroscopy of atoms and molecules, and other similar fields. You will train technicians and junior science team members to conduct experiments in the long run. You will independently own and lead projects, coordinate with the architecture, science, and engineering teams periodically and adjust priorities and the course of these projects. You will also process and interpret experimental data and collaborate with the theoretical team to support the development of models of various processes.
To succeed in this role, you will need a strong practical understanding of spectroscopic and imaging techniques for investigating fast processes (nanosecond timescales and longer). Demonstrated experience working with a wide range of diagnostic equipment is required. Experience building and working with vacuum systems in an experimental environment is expected. Experience with standard spectral and image analysis techniques for quantitative data interpretation. Experience using pulsed laser systems for excitation of gases or illumination of objects for fast imaging is highly desirable.
It is expected that you will be able to accept responsibility for multiple small-scale projects immediately, learn quickly, and lead these projects effectively. You must be highly motivated, eager to learn, and possess excellent communication and organizational skills.

As a Laser Physicist, you will apply your expertise to design, build, modify, and operate both new and existing pulsed laser systems. You will enhance and optimize these systems, such as improving laser beam quality, and work with vendors to procure necessary hardware devices needed for specific laser upgrades. Additionally, you will assist optics engineers with aligning complex laser beam paths, calibrating laser diagnostics equipment, identifying opportunities to improve current diagnostics, writing requirements, and working with vendors to develop state-of-the-art high-energy laser diagnostics. As an Experimental Physicist, you will lead the design, execution, and interpretation of experiments central to Xcimer’s Vulcan fusion program which aims to demonstrate wall plug breakeven. This individual will translate the physics basis and risk retirement plan into executable experiments, own diagnostic requirements, and develop Vulcan test plans that validate facility and subsystem readiness for ignition physics.
As the first experimentalist in the program, this role bridges physics, engineering, and systems integration. This physicist will ensure that Vulcan’s design, diagnostics, and experimental capabilities align directly with the needs of the Fusion Pilot Plant physics basis. As a Senior Cryogenic Engineer, you will lead the development of deuterium–tritium (DT) fuel handling and target filling capabilities for the Vulcan and Athena programs at Xcimer. This role is critical to enabling reliable, repeatable cryogenic target production and supporting high-repetition-rate experimental campaigns.
You will own the end-to-end design, integration, and operation of DT filling systems, working at the intersection of cryogenics, target fabrication, tritium handling, and experimental operations. We are looking for our engineers to apply their technical expertise, problem solving skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact the future of energy!
