2017 was an eventful year. But one memory stood out: when Darl Synder, a reader, sent me an American Flag in the mail. I was on assignment overseas when I got an email from my equipment manager asking me if I bought a television and had it sent to the office. ⬇️

Day 7 of Russian invasion: Reporting in a Kyiv subway station when out of nowhere 9-year-old Uliana tapped me on my arm. She gifted me a heart-shaped embroidery she had been working on while seeking shelter underground with her family from air raids. 📸 courtesy of mom. #ukraine

This is how I want to remember Pierre Zakrzewski. Big smiles. Fantastic human being. Kind, generous & radiates an upbeat can-do energy. From Kabul to Kyiv, he never stopped wanting to help. He was found dead alongside Ukrainian journalist, Oleksandra Kuvshynova. RIP Miss you.

Today, many attended a solemn & emotional mass funeral held for the 10 civilians said to have been killed in a U.S. drone airstrike in Kabul. It was a heartbreaking event for all. 7 children are amongst the dead. #Afghanistan latimes.com/world-nation/s…

As I was departing, we stood outside his gate – adorned with a new flag and we decided that we needed a picture together. After I left, another brushfire broke out near Lake Isabella and I was hurling my way towards it.
