Disabled people are NOT A BURDEN. Disabled people are NOT A BURDEN. Disabled people are NOT A BURDEN. Disabled people are NOT A BURDEN. If you are #disabled, you are NOT A BURDEN. You're a human being who deserves respect, compassion, independence, a platform, & equal rights.

Some personal news: We said yes!!! After nine years of dating and ten years of best friendship, Andrew and I are engaged πŸ₯ΉπŸ’œ
A selfie of Wendy and Andrew holding up their engagement rings in front of City Hall in Philly. Their mouths are wide open like they’re screaming for joy.

What the actual fuck. It would be one thing if they were canceling the whole fair, but instead they’re specifically discriminating against you because of your race. This is not okay.

Joe Biden just recognized the disability community in his speech!!!! I’m sobbing #CripTheVote

In 1999, Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote the majority opinion for the Olmstead case, declaring that people with disabilities have the right to live in their own communities rather in institutions. Brb leaving to go cry again.

Omg I am full of emotions tonight 😭 Biden recognized disability in his speech, and then @jaketapper spoke AT LENGTH about this on @CNN!!! He talked about the power of disabled voters & directed viewers to #CripTheVote. This is such a rare moment. Is this even real life?!

Here's the clip Thanks again to Jake for bringing this up. I look forward to Biden, Jake, and the world paying more attention to the needs of the disabled community. Thank you for recognizing our fight And thanks to my friend Dali for getting the clip x.com/DaliDimovski/s…

So a former Fox News contributor tweeted at me and now my mentions are blowing up. Just so we're clear: I'm fully vaccinated. I just don't want face masks to be stigmatized and I don't want disabled people to be left behind in this pandemic. Please stop harassing me.

In light of #StephenHawking's death, here are a few reminders for journalists: -AVOID subjective language in describing his disability (e.g. "suffered from ALS," "bound to a wheelchair") -TALK about his scientific contributions -DON'T turn his achievements into inspiration porn

Friendly reminder: Everyone’s experience with disability is different. Don’t make assumptions about how someone feels! A few weeks ago, I met this woman whose mother had a tracheostomy tube for decades like me. At first I got excited since I rarely meet others with trach tubes.

I love that news outlets are celebrating the LGBTQ and BIPOC people who have been elected β€” and reelected! β€” to Congress. I also wish they'd acknowledge the #disabled people who are now lawmakers too. It's painful to see disability get erased from election coverage. #CripTheVote

So excited that I'll be editing @nytimeswell for the next few months, starting today! I published my first @nytimes article back in December 2016, and it was a story for the Well desk about dating with a disability. It all comes full circle πŸ₯ΉπŸ’š

Please don't celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month unless your company is willing to do the actual work of hiring, supporting, and retaining workers with disabilities. We're more than a cute banner.
