THE THREAD TO END ALL THREADS. (Just kidding. Y’all know I’ll never stop doing threads.) Someone asked me to consolidate a bunch of my explainer threads into once place. Here are some I remember doing, and I suppose I could add to this over time:

I’m beginning to think “hindsight is 2020” was some kind of message from a future time traveler that we all misunderstood.

A tariff is actually the U.S. government charging a U.S. buyer to buy a foreign good. It’s not charging the foreign country anything.
The United States must, at long last, be treated fairly on Trade. If we charge a country ZERO to sell their goods, and they charge us 25, 50 or even 100 percent to sell ours, it is UNFAIR and can no longer be tolerated. That is not Free or Fair Trade, it is Stupid Trade!

BREAKING: The Fed just announced it will reveal monthly the names of companies and municipalities that borrow under its massive emergency lending programs, as it faces intense pressure to be transparent about its usage of bailout money.

Seems pretty notable that the president can no longer claim even one year of 3+% growth, with last year’s GDP numbers revised down to 2.5%. After all the tax cuts and deregulation, growth is still plugging along about where it was under Obama.

Progressives like @AOC and @AyannaPressley are leveraging seats on the Financial Services Committee & a huge social media following to confront bank executives and discourage them from funding oil pipelines, gun makers and private prisons. (via @Zachary)

BREAKING: FDIC Chairman Jelena McWilliams on Friday unexpectedly submitted her resignation after the Trump appointee faced partisan strife at the bank regulator, in a move that will give Democrats control of the agency in the coming weeks. Story on @POLITICOPro.

The noise the crowd made after President Trump was announced at the national championship is fascinating: No discernible unanimity of cheers or boos. The visceral sound of America right now.

For those wondering, the Government Accountability Office is essentially a nonpartisan, investigative arm of Congress that aims to shine a light on the activities of the executive branch.

The situation in Texas is harrowing. A friend of mine, her husband and their toddler are spending the night at her husband’s office. My parents’ power just came back on after eight hours and the internal temperature in their house is 44 degrees.

Goldman Sachs is projecting that jobless claims for this week will rise to *2.25 million* – up from 281,000 last week.

Thanks for all the love on this tweet! I don’t have anything to promote beyond the idea that finance and economics are important, and the reason you don’t understand them is because people don’t put much effort into helping you do so. But it’s not because you *can’t*!

Writing a story: *reads articles on topic* “My story won’t be this good.” *distracted by Twitter* *calls good source. inspired, calls more. none answer.* *distracted by Internet* *call backs from 8 sources at once* “My story will be amazing!” *begins writing* “I hate this story.”

The CFPB only regulates banks with more than $10 billion in assets (i.e. it does not regulate community banks)
Trump: At the ultra left CFPB, which was terrible -- so many people have been hurt by that -- I used to get calls from lending officers, from owners of small banks, and they were almost crying. What they did to those people, they destroyed them, put them out of business.
