How do dictators maintain power for life? I explain in a new book that they can stay in power by forming "Coalitions of the Weak" composed of tainted or inexperienced officials. Not a loyalty-competence tradeoff but one of institutions vs patrimonialism

China did not buy the world any time. As Comrade Zhou Xianwang pointed out on CCTV, 5 million people left Hubei before January 22nd
    3. Chinese spox: Countries like Singapore, ROK took necessary measures & put the epidemics under control because they made full use of this precious time China bought for the world. As for whether US availed itself of this window, I believe the fact is witnessed by US &the world.

This gives me hope for US China relations since both countries now produce official statistics in the same way, continuing the convergence between the two governments
🚨 Trump is demanding the firing of the Commissioner of Labor Statistics, Erika McEntarfer, because the jobs report was bad. When you can’t rig the numbers, fire the messenger. Classic authoritarian move.

Dear @twitter when we do a search on any Chinese city name in Chinese, this is what we get: ads and spams for prostitution and mistresses. Even these ads are probably not real, just govt bots trying to reduce news of China

It is incredibly daunting to follow in the footsteps of @SusanShirk1 who did so much for China studies, US policy toward China and for @21CenturyChina . I am grateful that my colleagues place so much trust in me.
Congratulations to @vshih2 who has been named the new director of @21CenturyChina at @GPS_UCSD. “We are proud of the impressive trajectory of @21CenturyChina under the transformative leadership of @SusanShirk1," said @UCSanDiego Chancellor Khosla. bit.ly/43zLLH8

For all you folks in awe of Deepseek: all of my students, including 100% of my students from China, are using ChatGPT. They all say it’s a lot better than Deepseek for projects involving sourcing, analyzing and presenting textual data (in Chinese)

I do think the US side is starting to realize the gravity of the situation and how prepared China is for a prolonged trade conflict while negotiating.
This evening, Vice Premier He Lifeng and I engaged in frank and detailed discussions regarding trade between the United States and China. We will meet in-person next week to continue our discussions.
