If it's a boring uninspiring job that also requires a certain level of intelligence, then your only lever is money. Why would they reject someone for placing a higher value on literally the only positive thing they have to offer?

The response is obvious here, but if you don't want to make it personal, frame it to them as an IRS work classification issue. There is a hard line between a W-2 employee and a 1099 contractor. Any W-2 employee must be provided all equipment needed to perform their work duties

This. I often watch with subtitles, not because I want to, but because I have to. Key dialogue is way too quiet and action scenes are way too loud. It’s either use subtitles or adjust the volume up and down constantly.

Pre-commit hooks: 1) Are easier to implement and configure than CI 2) Are free (no billable server runtime) 3) Keep your commit history clean, with far fewer "fix" commits. They are a great first step before CI.
